Calling it a comic or a graphic novel would be a much more fitting description.

Though it wouldn't adequately describe the style, which is an obvious selling point.

Thankfully, I'm not a pedant. Using a nice, two-syllable word that describes the art style, and is "close enough" to the original language, is good enough - and wholly appropriate when used on the other side of the world.

You're talking to the guy who refuses to even pretend to watch dubbed anime here. I truly despise what I've seen done to the series I love(Initial D and the Gundam series are high notes in the ones I've seen ruined).

Funnily enough, while I do prefer the Japanese dialogue, that wasn't what I was talking about. Initial D had all the names changed so that they were more 'American friendly' which just annoys me for some reason...and Gundam. Well, no UC Gundam series has really been given any chance. Though that's what they get for releasing W first...

Because, remember, there is definately such a thing as being TOO smart or culturally-informed.

It is hardly appropriate, because it causes confusion for people who want to learn more about it. People who want to understand and learn more about manga than just casual browsing will eventually hit upon that the term is being used differently in different situations, causing confusion that could otherwise be avoided if we decided to be a tad more culturally literate instead of arbitrarily deciding we had the right answer because it was close enough. Is this a major problem? No. Is it a pervasive one? No. But it's another barrier between cross-cultural communication that could otherwise be avoided. This Warcraft comic is no more a manga than Megatokyo is (and the latter also worms its way into the "manga" section of stores).

To reiterate, bastardizing a term for the sake of convenience is NEVER appropriate.

It's surprising to see someone who plays D&D say that the most common misconception is good enough - hasn't our favorite game struggled for years to get away from that very notion?

You don't need to be fluent; just remember that, as a rule, the English dub is never as good as the original Japanese.

One: At least it's not being called 'anime art'. That would be a proper case for hurting people.

Two: 'Manga' could be taken as three syllables to correspond to the three characters it takes to write: MA+N+GA. Although I doubt you'll ever hear it pronounced as such unless you're listening to a very formal, rhythmic set of song lyrics.

Three: Warcraft manga! Sweet! (Also, the cover looks sweet. We'll see what the rest is like later. Koreans are underrated on the international art scene...)

Yeah, that's what I thought too.

Even stumbled accross a book that went into the stylistic differences between Manga and Manhwa style.

Come to find out, I love 'em both, hehe.

Don't forget the Hong-Kong comics! Like Stormriders, hehe. I forget what the term is for that particular style though.

Well, what do you expect the bookstores to do? I'm no business guru, but I don't think a store like Borders would find it worth their time to separate their comic section into: Manga, Manhwa (Korean?), Manhua(Hong Kong?), Graphic Novels, etc. Maybe when such differences become more "mainstream". IMO, for the browser that is walking through the store, sometimes it's just more convenient having everything just "lumped" together under a section they recognize, like "manga".

For the most part I agree (I almost always prefer subs to dubs), but I wouldn't go so far as to use the word never.

If there were a smiley that makes that little "wiggle-your-hand-to-indicate-"so-so" I'd post that here. I have heard some dubs that not only weren't bad, but were actually quite good, but I personally have yet to find one that was as good as the original Japanese.

Don't even get me started on how dubbing at all takes away part of the integrity of the films as they are meant to be seen.
