Duelist and Unfettered Intelligence Bonuses to AC: Stack?

Chasmodai

First Post
Yeah, so my question is pretty much what's on the topic. Does the Intelligence bonus to AC from the Duelist's Canny Defense and the Unfettered's Parry (both are dodge bonuses) stack?

Thanks for the help.

By the rules, they'd stack. The fact that the classes weren't designed to be used together (AU dosn't necessarily multiclass well with D&D) suggests that the issue was never really considered; I certainly wouldn't let them stack. They're essentially the same bonus.

No. That would be dumb. Also, it would greatly facilitate obnoxious powergaming, and that kind of thing should be discouraged.

You can only stack bonuses of different types. If the bonus is the same type, you can't get it from two sources.

Also, if you're playing an Unfettered, why would you want to take levels in Duelist anyway? Seems to me the Unfettered makes the Duelist unnecesary.

...except for Dodge bonuses.

They always, and this was quite specifically stated, stacked in 3e. I don't know whether they stack in 3.5, but Unfettered are designed with the 3e rules rather than 3.5 in mind, I think. Besides, it would seem quite a reversal for dodge bonuses to have suddenly stopped stacking, after all the emphasis they put on it previously.

I agree though, why bother with both? You just need Unfettered really. And sicne they;re both the same concept, I as a DM wouldn't allow a character to take both.

Any sane DM wouldn't allow you to take both classes. The two systems, although basically compatible, are really not the same. You probably shouldn't let either system borrow from the other.

Technically, by the rules, dodge bonuses stack.

A DM should look at a character concept to make sure it is balanced. I'm not familiar with the details of these class, but the DM should make a judgement as to whether they become overpowered if allowed to act under the normal rules.

Fighter gets a DEX bonus to AC. So does rogue. So does a fighter/rogue get to count his DEX bonus twice?

Thought not.

PS

Uh .. tell me you aren't serious?

Dex bonus to AC, opposed to a Dodge bonus to AC .. Different named bonus' .. so that's a moot point.

Now the fact that Duelist, and Unfettered get Int to AC .. would *by the rules* stack [edit]because they are both Dodge bonus'[/edit] .. but the DM would have to be pretty obtuse to allow it.

Where is it called a Dex bonus to AC? Oh. That means its an unnamed bonus to AC... and the rest of your argument falls apart.

Of course it shouldn't be allowed. Don't quibble about semantics.
