Duelist and Unfettered Intelligence Bonuses to AC: Stack?

Where is it called a Dex bonus to AC? Oh. That means its an unnamed bonus to AC... and the rest of your argument falls apart.

Of course it shouldn't be allowed. Don't quibble about semantics.

PS

Except that a character gets a dex bonus to AC, it isn't a class ability for anyone. So, your analogy isn't quite right.

I don't have the classes in front of me but by the rules I think they would stack, but I think a reasonable response to mixing them would be that the unfettered and duelist levels would stack for determining max level of int bonus to AC.

Both int AC bonuses are limited by class level, correct?

If I were to have a character mix them, that is how I would suggest it be handled.

Also, if you're playing an Unfettered, why would you want to take levels in Duelist anyway? Seems to me the Unfettered makes the Duelist unnecesary.

Hey, don't ask me, I'm not the one planning to play this. The reason I asked is because a player of mine brought this issue up - he's playing a swashbuckler type and thought Duelist would be a nice progression.

Thanks for the input, anyhow. And yes, I agree with all of you.

No sane DM would allow the bonuses to stack, even if the rules allow it.

And I am definitely not insane.

i'm surprised someone would allow AU along with D&D. Too many little things that make certain spells and abilities hugely overpowerful in the other world and mixing them just causes more of a commotion.

I've DMed 8 sessions of mixing them and we've had no problems. We have noticed so power irrugularity, but not enough to cause concern.

A Duellist doesn't get a Dodge bonus.

He adds one point of Intelligence bonus per level to his Dexterity bonus to modify Armor Class.

I don't have AU, so I don't know how the Unfettered is phrased.

If it says "gains a Dodge bonus equal to his Intelligence bonus", it stacks. I

f it says "adds his Intelligence bonus to AC", it stacks, because a Duellist does not add his Intelligence bonus to AC; he adds his Intelligence bonus to his Dex bonus, and then adds his modified Dex bonus to his AC. So the Unfettered's "Intelligence bonus" to AC would stack with the Duellist's "modified Dexterity bonus" to AC.

But if the Unfettered also says "adds his Intelligence bonus to his Dex bonus", they don't stack, because they're two named bonuses ('Intelligence bonus') adding to the same thing ('Dexterity bonus to modify AC').

Be surprised again; we've been mixing them regularly for some time now and have had no problem at all.

I would say, no ... but I would allow the Unfettered and Duellist levels to stack to determine the maximum applicable bonus (i.e., Duellist(2)/Unfettered(3) woud allow up to a +5 bonus form intelligence).

However, that's how I'd hosue rule it, because that's how I think it should work ... not neccessarily how it does work.

Stacking

I don't think I would wholesale disallow it. The Unfettered's Parry applies versus a single target, while the Duelist's advantage is all the time (like the Bladesinger). As such, I don't think it would be that problematic to allow it to work together. Also, the abilities one gets as a Duelist are different enough from an Unfettered that its not completely unreasonable to want to step out of the Un class to get them. However, I probably wouldn't just because the Un's bonuses are too sweet in my opinion.
