Duels of Impending DOOM! An exercise on PVP/PVE battles

The Tangled Web (www.thetangledweb.net) is trying to set up something like that online on a weekly basis, using openRPG. Are you associated with them? If not, you ought to check them out. Look for the "Friday Night Fights" thread in the General Discussion part of their forums.

Nope not associated at all, but its definitely a cool idea. I will have to have a look at openRPG, one of the main things I enjoy about these duels are that I get to face off against Blarg and building the characters is where I get the most enjoyment. This was originally designed as an exercise to get me used to using the Paizo statblock and generate up a bunch of characters for my regular game :) Plus I had a bunch of character concepts I wanted to try out on paper seeing as my current character is alot more survivable that I had first thought.

Thanks for the link,
E

Looooooove the new statblock. After running a few chars with it in these duels, I'm converting my PCs over to it. It's so much easier to find the information I need when I need it!

Two quick questions about the Druid 5 that kicked the Barbarian's butt:
1) When did he take empower? At level 1 (when he couldn't use it), or at level 3 (when he could only use it on 0th level spells)?
2) When did he take Natural bond? At level 1 (when it had no effect) or at level 3 (when it had no effect)?

Not trying to be snarky, but when I see these builds in PvP context where the build could not conceivably survive to reach the level it strikes me as somewhat . . . skewed.

A couple of other questions: what was the terrain like that these were held on? Have you tried switching characters and re-running the battles? Do you know what the other person is making when you build yours? If one must choose first, they are at an inherant disadvantage.

Generally we just made two characters separately and then dueled them out, haven't had a chance to change up the characters, hopefully today, Blarg is coming over in a little bit. As far as the Druid goes, I will ask Blarg cause I have no idea.

Cheers,
E

Ok I've read about this druid vs. barb fight in at LEAST 4 threads now, why can't we move on? You have basically demonstrated that a (severely twinked) flying character with powerful magical ranged attacks will kill a melee character who has zero cover and throwing axes around 100% of the time.

Again: try the encounter in a pitch dark 20x20x10' room with combatants in either corner and tell us what happens.

Thanks for the support KM :D

Gumphrey, I agree that most all these battles are situational. And we have tried the battle a few more times, trying to even out the conditions for both sides.

Cheers,
E

Three more builds.

Here is Blarg's Duskblade/Warblade build. In fight #6 he took on my roommate's Swashbuckler/Wizard and I played the Swordsage/Battle Sorcerer. The Swordsage managed to get them both with Hideous Laughter but lacked the ability to capitalize on it, mainly due to some really horrible roles. I managed to kill off the Swashbuckler but then Blarg slaughtered me :(

Dragons!!!

Well after having built all these characters we decided to see what they could do. I would run a CR 5 Large Red Dragon vs 4 of characters of Blarg's and my roommate's choice. Blarg chose the Duskling Barbarian/Dragonshaman and the Human Ranger/Scout. My roommate chose the Dwarf Barbarian/Fighter and the Raptoran Duskblade.

First fight went well in their favor vs the CR 5 Large Red Dragon, the dragon got in there quickly and breathed on 3 of them as he had rolled a high initiative, but under the concentrated attacks of the PCs the dragon went down quickly. The Dragonshaman's Energy Shield aura really added up against a creature that has 6 attacks a round.

Second fight was against a CR 7 Large Red Dragon, again he caught 3 of the characters in his breath weapon and nearly killed off two in the first round. After getting hit with a Ray of Enfeeblement it was harder for him to hit the High AC Barbarian :( But in the end he managed to kill off all but the Ranger/Scout.

All in all the characters are quite powerful and a fun challenge to try to kill :)

Cheers,
E
