Is this the same 'extended version' that they showed on Sci-Fi with all the storyboard/sketchy stuff at the front and a 'directed by' attribution for Alan Smithee? Or is it some other version?

As far as I know, yes, that's the one.
 


I also like it. I don't see why people hate it so much (other than Sting, of course). Yes, it's long and somewhat boring in places, but so was the novel.
 

I think the disdain for it exists on a number of levels. There's a lot of overacting. The "thought bubbles" don't come across well. There were plenty of miscastings and strange character interpretations. It takes many liberties with the source material. Frankly, the Sci-Fi Channel mini-series was a much better adaptation of the book.

All that said, I like this film. It's epic in a way movies rarely are. From the music to the length, it's really fun to watch.
