Dungeon Magazine Pricing Issue (long, sorry)

First Post
Hi EN Worlders, this is my very first post and I'm sorry to say it has to be a slight rant. I hope I don't end up sounding like an idiot. I've been using EN World for over 6 months now and I must say, I feel like I've known alot of you forever!

First let me say I like Dungeon Mag/Poly quite a bit. Its pretty good and I usually enjoy the read and its use. The extras, like maps and monster markers are great and are always an added bounus, however...

With the change over to a monthly schedule for the magazine, Pazio, as we all know, decreased the page count and decreased the cost by $1.00, from $7.99 (bimonthly) to $6.99 (monthly).

I received the first monthy issue (May) and I must say, I did not expect such a decrease in the page count. May's issue has 100 pages, exactly. This would be alright with me if not for the cover price. Let me show you my example. The previous Mar/Apr issue has 180 pages, close to 2x times the amount of the current May issue and at a cost of $7.99. If you split the Mar/Apr issue into two months, you would be paying about $4.00 for 90 pages of material. Compairing this to the May issue of 100 pages for $6.99, thats quite an increase in cost. Close to 70%-75% increase in price. We are now really paying about $14.00 for what we were originally paying $8.00 for. I know that subscription prices make the magazine less expensive, but all this information still works on a comparable level.

I know what some of you are thinking, "its a quality magazine", and I would agree. But such an increase I'm not so sure is worth it anymore.

Maybe others can shed some light on the subject and convince me otherwise? I really do like the magazine, but the price is getting steep and you have to say "no" some time or another!

Has anyone else received this month's issue? Last month's Dragon was $5.99 and clocked in at 114 pages, if that's of any use as a comparison number.

I too was disappointed with the dramatic size decrease. I can only hope tht it will not continue, and that it was just a fluke. The Dungeon magazine has always been a good value, but now with the dramatic page decrease plus the fact that every other issue polyhedra will be the lions share, it is starting to lose it's luster.

This was mentioned when the change was originally announced so I'm not sure why you seem surprised.

Well I just counted seven full page ads, not counting covers (which are included in the page count), which add two more. So that's nine ad pages (two are in house), plus a few column ads, so that's a little over ten percent ads. Now keep in mind magazines run on ad revenue and compare this issue of Dungeon/Poly's 10% ads to typical US magazines which usually run around 50% and I don't see how it's that bad, especially after comparing it to a standard RPG book of around 64 pages.

As far as the content is concerned I'm glad to finally see a SW article and sizeable LGJ article again.

While it was mentioned by Paizo that pages would be cut, it was NOT mention how much. It would be crazy to think they could maintain 180 pages a month. I stated in my original post "we know Paizo decreased the pages". I'm simply surprised at the amount cut, not that it was cut.

While I understand what you are saying about the ads, it really has nothing to do with my comments. I'm simply comparing the bimonthly issue to the monthly issue, nothing else. I really don't understand how anyone would not be at least concerned over the very big difference in cost. I don't mind a slight increase, but you'd be hard pressed to argue that its not alot!! And trying to compare Dungeon to a fully produced RPG book, well, thats a whole different ball of wax.

I fully agree with this about the SW and LGJ articles. Both articles were great! Like I said in my post, I like the magazine!! And I don't even play the Star Wars D20, but I really liked the read. Its about time, and only time will tell if this lasts.

Well, I'm home now and able to check (to make I wasn't imagining things), so I did and in issue #97's Table Talk (the Poly editorial) Erik does specifically say that they two sides would alternate between 60 pages and 40 pages. He didn't use pecentages, but actual page counts. Though he only did so the first so I can see later and over time to flop the two.

Ultimately the point the point is if they're bringing less money in from ads, then they'll need to charge more for the magazine.

Of course I'm not one to complain about price increases if they're justified, and since this mag is still a good value, so I don't see a reason to worry yet.

Yeah, it was rather disheartening to see LGJ shrink over time in Dragon, hope it doesn't happen again for these two in Poly.

Well, I stand corrected on the page issue. I had missed that one.

I truly understand what you are saying about the ads and you are correct about the cost ratio, but last issue only had 13 pages of full ads for 180 pages of material. So the ratio per page for ads are still about the same but with an increased price to the magazine.

Thanks.

Just out of curiosity, why is that?
