Dungeon magazine says maybe more vile. Huzzah!

I'm with you Sigil.

Samuel Goldwyn was asked why he didn't produce rated R movies. His response was that he would rather sell four tickets than two.

To me, "vile" material is an indication of lack of originality. They need more and more 'shocking' material to get a thrill in a shallow attempt to entertain.

I hope Paizo searches for good material rather than shocking material.

When was the last time you saw a movie or read a book and said, "That would have been better if they had more torture or used the F-word about 3 more times".

I have said the opposite. That's why I no longer read Terry Goodkind.

Most of us were introduced to this hobby in our pre-teen years ( ran a poll on this a while back).

In my pre-teen years, I remember the GM rolling a 1d4 to see if someone "attacking" a vampire managed to grab her t*t.

By pushing up the "Rating" of the game, we're pulling up the ladder behind us... if D&D had been "Mature Gaming" when YOU found it, would YOU have gotten into it?

Hey, at least the White Wolf LARPers have a better female to male ratio than D&D. (;

Oh well, I had stopped buying Dragon in part because Pazio seemed to be printing Vile and Mature for Vile and Mature's sake. Looks like it might be years until I can be a happy customer again.

The evilest person in history, Adolph Hitler, never ate the heart of a virgin, never had sex with a succubus, and did not have a coat made of human skin. He might never have even killed a person.

If the attrocities of the nazi Germany were not vile, I don't know what is. And yes, there are examples of nazis who had lamp shades and other decorations made from human skin. How about working people to death, gassing them, and then having so many corpses to dispose of at one time that they needed bulldozers to do the job? Not vile?Think again.

Sigh. I'm not saying the Nazi government wasn't evil. I'm saying they weren't "vile" as in "BoVD vile". Perhaps you should read "Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil", by Hannah Arendt.

Heinrich Himmler often passed out when he saw blood.

Adolph Hitler did not bite off his carpets when he entered a rage.

Joseph Goebbels wasn't a cackling psychopath, forever rubbing his hands while anticipating his next murder.

Adolph Eichmann did not get into incest or bestiality, much less self-mutilation. Indeed, he was only a petty bureaucrat, and a very mediocre one at that.

Hermann Goering was a drug addict who liked to loot art collections.

They could be considered vile. But they did not commit cannibalism, masochism, self-mutilation, bestiality or necrophilia. The only one who was addicted was Goering; the only "true" sadist in the top ranks of Nazi government (excluding, obviously, Streicher) was Heydrich. All the others just played with numbers, and fainted when they saw blood. Therefore, they are not "vile", as in "I RAPE VIRGINS AND SACRIFICE CHILDREN TO ASMODEUS vile".

perhaps they should let this idea branch off into an alternative version of the magazine, or even three.

1- Dragon Magazine for Hardcore Conservative Panzies
2- Dragon Magazine Classic
3- Dragon Magazine *Mature*

Just to chime in, I'm a subscriber to Dungeon and I must say, I was annoyed at the issue with the Vile content. Not because of the Vile content per say, the adventure itself did very little for me. It was sort of interesting, but I couldn't fit it in my campaign. Anyway, as I was saying I was annoyed by the Vile content issue because of the sealed section. I found it difficult to unseal it without scraping the whole section. If they want to do another issue, fine by me, I'll read the adventure and judge it on its own, but please find another way of sealing it, if you have to seal it... I'm rambling so, I'll return to my popcorn and bublegum adventures... :)

So the only evil should be the plotting, scheming evil?

Apart from the fact that I find this concept a bit reductive, I don't see why the people who dislike vile material can't just ignore it.

*I*, instead, am getting fed up with villains that plot, scheme, laugh, send flowers to the PCs and, despite being (metaphorically and sometimes literally) fiends, never actually do something as sick and insane as any human psychopath could do. There are dozens, hundreds of villains like that.

Yet I don't pop into every thread about "my BBEG is hatching a plan that in a dozen years, during which he will look just like a member of the upper class, will take him to the leadership of the empire", saying that everyone has seen a dozen of those "clever" plots already. Why don't I pop into every etcetera? Because it doesn't have any influence whatsoever on any game that involves me, and because I have faith in the guys that post such threads that they will certainly find some way to make the trite interesting.

So can't the same be said for vile content?
