For myself, it is True20 (if it counts) and 3e. However, 3e would require some house rules, some third party stuff, and very little in terms of WOTC supplements outside of Unearthed Arcana (ok supplements include: MM2, Fiend Folio, the dedicated monster books, BoVD (DM only), the environment books, Heroes of Horror, Heroes of Battle, and a few select elements from various other books).

As for other d20 fantasy variants that I would consider giving a try, they include Grim Tales, Swashbuckling Adventures, and Rokugan.
Grim Tales, because I like the d20Modern setup. The question would be how easy it would be to bring in Elements of Magic:Mythic Earth and Green Ronin's Psychic's Handbook.

Pre 3e DND, 4e and Pathfinder, I have no interest in.

Pre- 3e DND: Despite loving certain setting like Darksun, Ravenloft, Al Quadim, 1e Forgotten Realms, and the Known World Gazateers- I stopped playing and running editions prior to 3e for a reason.

4e: I will not play 4e. This may or may not change depending upon third party support and the products they produce. If third party's provide alternative mechanics on the level that EN Publishings Elements of Magic Revised (or Mythic Earth) and Artificer's Handbook (Mystic Eye Games) did for 3e, I'll give 4e another look. Currently, there are a few changes that I do like, but outweighed by the number of things that I do not like. However, I am hoping that someone will rewrite the 3e player races to be more like 4e with non-biological abilities being feats.

Pathfinder: I don't like most of the changes in the alpha or beta. However, I might borrow how they handled spells costing XP as well as a few of the spells

I have yet to find a version of D&D I don't like though some of the knock offs I do find un appealing. Third eidtion though is still my game of choice though I am looking forawrd to really trying out 4e. One strength of 3e is the multiple options from the thousands of books, so I think waiting a year or 2 collectiing some great books for 4e will really make my first game of it shine.

BECMI all the way baby! That said I'm running a 3.x game right now, and LOVE the design on the old 1e AD&D adventures (even now, decades later). 2e had good settings.
So ideally, a 3e game, 1st ed. or BEMCI (in increasing ability for me to run a pickup game in).

I voted 4E, but the real answer is 4E/3.5/E6 & D20 conan.
I would never go back to earlier editions.
The 4E rules are terrific but I dislike the core setting. To the point where I wouldn't play 4E if I had to play core setting/rules only.
3.5 is a fine set of rules that i'm happy to use. I just wouldn't DM using them at anything past about 7th level.

I've played 1st, 2nd, 3/3.5 and now 4th edition. By far, 4E is the most streamlined, familiar interpretation of the fundamentals of how a D&D game should play at the table with a base mechanic to cover practically every option that crops up during play.

Well, I think I prefer the 4E rules over the other editions. It's not based on playtesting, yet, though. I still have my hands full DMing a 3.5 campaign.

There's several aspects of 3.5 I don't like but they're not yet sufficiently annoying that I feel I have to stop or switch.

I wouldn't like to play one of the older editions, though. Been there, done that.

I'll play any edition of D&D, and wish I could more often.

My preferred version to DM at this time is 4e, so I went with that.
