'Dungeons & Dragons' fights for its future

Actually, yeah, for a news source this seems pretty good. My only real objection is that World of Warcraft is kicking the pants off of _everything_ - 100,000 subscribers for D&D Online is a million a _month_... round down for promotions and inflated numbers and call it $10 million a year. This is not exactly chump change.

D&D would be hard pressed to be a significant digit in the eyes of some of the things that folks like Blizzard (or Hasbro, for that matter) have to care about, money-wise, but for us... yeah, it's a big deal.

Except that they're saying it's sad that WotC is doing this, because D&D is now imitating its imitators.

Doesn't matter to the fans. And besides it does not say it is sad. It just "modernizes" it.

I hope that DDI makes a fraction of what WoW makes. That can only be win, win for us. From what little I have seen of it, I have my doubts. I have my doubts that it will be functional by June. They will have to give trials away, at software stores, and be priced below WoW.

The truth is that just as you can spot the bias and misdirection in any story as long as you are informed about and fluent in the subject. Just because you don't see the distortion in a story about politics, the Middle East, or anything else outside your area of expertise doesn't mean that it isn't there.
Very true. Doesn't make it okay, though.

You got to remember that the author of the article is a technology and science reporter, so of course he focused more on the online stuff, and the computer game angle.

He must be a geek that hangs out here.

Any press is good press for our hobby, i.e. a very bad Tom Hanks movie.

IMO this article is a DDI promotion.

While it might be, WotC better get of its a** and make the DDI work. From what I have seen so far I am not convinced yet. This can't be good either since some folks might see this article, go to the website, and go "They want us to pay for this?"

I wonder what their username is.

Hi, I'm really Keith Olbermann and I have been secretly posting here for years.

OK, maybe not, but if one of you are, could I please get Alison Stewart's number? <sigh>

RPG market size

$30 million market for traditional RPGs, is that even close to accurate? If so... wow, that is a small market, comparable to the revenue of a single smallish tech company. I guess it's not so outlandish when I think about the sizes of the companies involved in the industry, but still, for something that's been such a big part of my life, it sure is tiny potatoes in the larger economic context.

You have a point.
