Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

It appears a Dark Sun campaign setting book is coming out in 2026.

Wizards of the Coast has released four new D&D subclasses for playtesting, all of which have heavy thematic ties to the post-apocalyptic Dark Sun setting. The four subclasses, released as "Apocalyptic Subclasses," include the Circle of Preservation Druid, the Gladiator Fighter, the Defiled Sorcerer, and the Sorcerer-King Patron Warlock. Although not stated outright, the Gladiator and Sorcerer-King Patron are explicit nods to the Dark Sun setting, set in a ruined world ruled by Sorcerer-Kings where gladiatorial fights were common.

The Circle of Preservation Druid creates areas of preserved land that grants buffs to those who stand upon it. The Gladiator adds secondary Weapon Mastery properties to their attacks, with bonus abilities. Notably, the Gladiator uses Charisma as its secondary stat. The Defiled Sorcerer can expend its hit dice to amp up damage to its attacks and can also steal the life of its targets to deal additional damage. The Sorcerer-King Patron gains a number of abilities tying into tyranny and oppression, with the ability to cast Command as a Bonus Action without expending a spell slot, causing targets to gain the Frightened Condition, and forcing those who attack them to re-roll successful attacks.

The survey for the subclasses goes live on August 28th.

I guess the original message of the DS from the 90s was we have to be responsible with caring for the environment because future generations will suffer the consequences of our actions. Comparing with others D&D has been a relatively ideologically neutral, and I would rather this to be like this.
Now we are in 2025, and the point of view may be different, for example somebody warns we should take care with the "false prophets" of the ecology who reclaim absolute control by the state with the excuse to save the planet.
Other point was "the world sucks and a lot of things has to be fixed, but if we work together we have an opportunity to create a better future for the next generations".
  • Other idea for possible spin-off is the defilers from the Athaspace discovered a planar gate toward two alternate Krynns. One where Raistlin defeated the gods and caused the end of the civilitation, and other there the deities were defeated by the king-priest of Ishtar like in the short story “There is Another Shore You Know, Upon the Other Side” (from the antology "the dragons of chaos").
  • Now I am thinking the champions of Rajaat rebeled against this when these discovered his true plan. What if the SKs discovered the truth thanks a time-traveler from the future where there is a new blue age but all no-halflings were terminated?

* How would be if defilers arrived to a world with a plant-zombie apocalypse style "the last of us"?

* Other idea is paraelemental clay clerics creating "ectoplasm" to heal zones that were "sterelized" by defiling magic. Really it would be more like adding a new layer over the previous. Maybe it only would help for plants with "short" roots because it would be better than nothing.

* And what about "solar sails" by magitek or biopunk-tech? they would work like solar farms, or a magic version of ancient Persian windmills. Maybe the ancient rushtili invented something like the Halladay windmill for their ships to not depend so much on the direction of the wind

We could have whole separate thread about how exactly ideology is built into D&D at its core, it has been examined and subject of criticism for years. All art is political because it is ,even at subconcious level, shaped by political views of the creator and political climate of the time and area it was created in.

I can only remember images. Same as Trek TOS.
The Welsh coal mine has closed down, leaving the miners unemployed. A corporation has opened up near by offering abundant cheep clean energy.

Turns out the evil corporation are pumping toxic waste down the mine, creating the deadly mutant maggots.

The day is saved by the nearby hippie commune and their magic mushrooms.
