Dungeons & Dragons the movie: "level" reference

Hello there.

I just watched Dungeons & Dragons the movie. It was horrible. But you already know this...

However, I noticed something rather interesting in one scene where one of the two thieves (the main character I think) said something like this to the female wizard in the party:

"Correction, you are a low level wizard".

I always thought of "levels" as something rules specific and not something the characters know anything about, which is obviously not the case in this crappy film...

My question is, do you think levels should be used in game as a unit of measuring power?

No. Never seen the movie, but the more I hear about it the more my ass twitches. So glad I never actually spent any money on that movie.

No. In the movie I'm pretty sure it was a metagming joke.

No, not really. I'm okay with the concept of personal power being represented by artificial terms; for instance, in my game if a wizard can cast 6th level spells, some people will refer to her being of the 6th circle. But levels? No way.

That movie really had a sucky DM, eh?

I don't have a problem with people referring to being an "X" level wizard in a non-metagaming sense. I think the reason people object to it is because of metagaming backlash.

After all, if Gary had decided to call them "degrees" instead of "levels," would we all be laughing at the Masons whenever they referred to themselves as an Xth degree Mason?

It was probably an in joke, but it's not that bad a reference. "Your a low level beurocrat...", ect. But, alas, not the best of films. Seen worse, though.

Yeah, basicly it was a combination meta'game' joke (and really the best joke in the movie quite, going on the old rules this was based more off of: "You've used your sleep spell for the day... here's a dagger. Try not to get killed.").

If you want to talk about sillyness in refrence to the movie, I believe wizzards had some downloadable adventures based on it, or stats in a Dragon... the lead hero guy is like a 3rd level fighter / rogue, the main villians are all level 15+...

So, how do you refer to characters of high power level in your games? I actually have a magical academy in my campaign, so they have levels of education the same way we have Bachelors, Masters, and Doctors.
