And you know that those are the best versions of the minis that they could get.
Untrue. In another here on these boards, a WotC representative mentioned they stopped using the masters for the screenshots since Night Below. So what you see IS representative of the quality you can expect.
Having just bought a starter and two boosters I can say this:
The minis from the starter are painted very well - better or at least as good as most rares. And the green dragon doesn't look quite as goofy as on the pictures.
I've not been overly happy about my boosters - three duplicate commons and only a single Large (the bulette - which is awesome, btw.!).
The rares (spectral magelord & emerald orb wizard) would have been fine as uncommons but not so as rares (however, I am a bit biased since I feel cheated whenever I get a non-Large rare...).
The paint job on the uncommons was good. They're also nice sculpts, so nothing to complain there.
The commons were mostly ugly. The grick is really a bad sculpt - very 2D. And I don't like the cartoony look of the new trog at all. The gnoll actually looks better than on the gallery and the deathjump spider is neat.
I never buy more than three boosters of a set. I only bought two of 'Desert of Desolation', but I'll get a third one for this one. I want a Large rare!!!
