DVD Prices (For Television)

No, it is crazy. The shows have already paid for themselves many times over through the initial airing and syndication in most cases.
When you write that bestselling novel or RPG aid and decide to reprint it down the road, be sure to deny all royalties because it already paid for itself many times over.

I agree that they are overpriced. My favorite series are all on HBO (which I do not subscribe to), and those are usually much higher on a per-episode basis than almost any other show. Thank goodness for Netflix.

I thought you can't use your Personal Shopping Day discount with any other discount.

Yes you can at least at the stores I shop at. I do it all the time. I combine it with coupons every month. My roommate and I share a card so we usually spend enough to get a personal shopping day every month.

Last shopping day I combined my shopping day with a 30% coupon off.

We have been doing this since the program came out and it has worked at all the Borders in South Florida.

This I agree for some reason HBO shows are way overpriced. I download them and watch them.

Isn't Dead Like Me HBO? If I had had $50 the other day to waste, I would of snapped up Seasons 1 & 2 of that show packaged together at Best Buy. Usually they are ~$40 a piece.

Showtime had Dead like me.

Firefly was $50 for 13 episodes, money well spent in my book. The Stargate SG1 seasons are $50 each also which I think is a good deal.

Interestingly, when first issued, it was $35 for the same set - and the sales were fantastic (relativley speaking, of course) for a short period of time. Making sure no fan could imagine passing it up payed off in volume.

DVD prices are based upon what the market will bear. For every show there'll be a sweet spot in the competition between number of sales and return on those sales. The shows with really rabid fans (like Trek) will carry a higher price, because rabidity means they're willing to spend the big $$.

I think Borders was selling Firefly set for $25 last week.

It depends on the studio. Warner, Fox, Sony shows are cheaper than HBO plus all of the shows that are put out by the smaller guys -- like the Transformers. When I was in the video distribution business, I was always amazed at the cost of those half-seasons!

I think everyone is cheaper than HBO. They want to milk The Sopranos as much as possible - a season of 13 is something like $80. Though at least they aren't as bad as Universal, who both tries to charge a lot of money (okay, maybe not Soprano's money, but full price for half seasons), and sticks everything on those stupid flipper discs...
