DVD Prices (For Television)

Eh... HBO shows are more expensive, it doesnt bother me that they charge more.

Im just glad they put the shows out this way, because they are my preferred DVD rental and purchase.

I like good television, but Im not willing to organize my life around it, so shows on DVD (or Itunes) are perfect for me.

I agree that they are overpriced. My favorite series are all on HBO (which I do not subscribe to), and those are usually much higher on a per-episode basis than almost any other show. Thank goodness for Netflix.

I'd love to buy me some Deadwood or Rome.... but $80+ a season?! Holy crap no! Maybe it is because HBO shows are more expensive to make, but usually... the seasons are about 12-13 episodes. $80 for 12-13 episodes just.... isn't worth it.

I've found the prices on most other TV shows to be pretty reasonable, barring a few cases (Star Trek et all).

Because Paramount knows that certain Trekkies will pay for anything with Trek's name on it.

It seems a lot of cult shows are like that look how expensive Brisco County JR is it came out a really high price.

I buy a lot of boxed sets and shpws like say ER are nearly as costly as some of the SF shows I want.

They've gone up to $35, but B5 seasons are also on sale through Amazon currently.

The thing is, for me anyway, is what you're getting for your entertainment dollar. Some HBO shows -- certainly Deadwood and Rome, and much of Six Feet Under and the early Sopranos -- are of such incredibly high quality they're every bit as good as any feature film. As such, 12 episodes is equivalent in quality entertainment time to 6 good movies, and I don't have a problem paying $13 for a good movie. They seem plenty worth it to me.

Isn't Dead Like Me HBO? If I had had $50 the other day to waste, I would of snapped up Seasons 1 & 2 of that show packaged together at Best Buy. Usually they are ~$40 a piece.

season 1 is ~$15 at amazon, not sure what two is.

Well I know Rome was super expensive, so they can price the box sets at whatever and I will buy them (already did in fact) just to help encourage them to make season 2.

As for the prices, there's so many other ways to get the discs (netflix, blockbuster, local rental store etc) that I don't see it as a bad thing. The price really only matters if you're determined to own everything.

A few months back the local Wal-Mart had seasons 1-3 of Smallville at $20 each. I am kicking myself for not picking them up back then.



EDIT: Just checked walmart.com and seasons 1-3 are $17.99 season 4 is $ 44.77 and season 5 is $29.87.

It's all supply & demand.

I wouldn't be surprised if the bean-counters for the studios have hundreds of charts and graphs determing the perfect starting price and the precise time when to reduce the prices after the initial demand dies down.
