Dwarves with crossbows

For what it's worth, my wife and I recently finished reading The Hobbit aloud to one another a chapter at a time at night. From that I'd note that:

1) Thorin Oakenshield and the other dwarves use swords pretty much exclusively. Perhaps because they've plundered what was once elvish goods that the trolls had, though.
2) They use bows.

Other random thoughts:
* I agree on the Long of the Rings as the major stereotype influence for many people. Gimli is the archtypical dwarf, Legolas the elf.
* Note that in the books, the ancient weapons of Gondor are axes. Those huge statues along the river are armed with axes, not swords, in the books. In the movie they have long swords that long nicer in terms of vertical lines in statues, something JRRT didn't have to deal with.
* For what it's worth, I think the only crossbow users we see in the LoTR movies are the orcs.
