You mentioned forests/mountains and a monster slayer PC. Maybe a monster hunt has gone wrong and the monster is now hunting/stalking them? Bonus points for being during the middle of a blizzard.

I started a campaign once with the PCs having just been turned back to flesh from stone. They were all petrified some years ago and the world changed around them. They were soldiers out of time and the local lord was able to have them do things he could not.

Was planning to start one where they had a criminal holed up and had to capture them - but the rest of the adventure was blizzard and yetis and having to hole up against them in a choice of different camps along the way and did they trust the criminal to help out when his life was on the line? And not escape?

I remember a scenario where the PCs were summoned. By a Summon Monster spell gone awry, cast by a village wizard's apprentice from his master's grimoire, due to his master being impaled by a pitchfork against a door. What do you do? Side with the wizard, the crowd? After dealing with the immediate problem, the PCs had to learn from the grimoire how to open a portal to get back home and gather the relevant components.
