E-Tools: Move 'stuff' from PC to PC

machine

First Post
Howdy!

I'm presuming that with E-Tools, something created on one PC can be moved/copied to another PC?

Anyone with insight to this?

Thanks!

Sure, in three different ways.

The character, race, monster, treasure and table files are all saved independently and you can copy, zip, e-mail those like any other attachment, etc.

The database itself, if you needed to move it for some reason, could be transported. Zipped I think it's under 1 MB, maybe closer to 800 kb. So if you got all of your custom data entered and wanted your group to have access to it you could (they'd dump their old db and replace it with your db -- this is presuming they have their own copy of eTools).

And finally, a guy named Davin is working on (well basically done minus a coupld of points) a program that will allow you to export and import individual database items built with the customizers (custom feats, skills, spells, weapons, etc.). It's a really sweet little program, I can't wait for folks to see it. It also has a nice "backup database" function so you can save your db before you start monkeying with it.

So basically, you can create a character, put them in a portable media (floppy or zip disk) bring it to your DM's house so he can look it view it in his own e-Tools, correct?

Can you also transport house rules to individual players, in case they want to create and equip their character using your house rules?

What happens if that character file have a custom magic item from another DM, can it still be viewed in a different DM's e-Tools?

Yep.

Using Davin's program, yep. When you export, you can select one or many of your custom items, and they get exported to an .xml file. Copy that to the destination computer, use Davin's program to import that .xml file, and voila.

If the character file has custom items not currently in the database, they show up as "blanks" in the program. So you'll want to export custom items and have those sent along and imported before looking at the character.

Man!

Thanks for the info Eric.

This keeps getting better and better! Woohoo!

So, the release date is still for this Friday, right?

It's called ET Helper. It will have several modules. The module I've seen in action can do import/export of custom (and core, actually) items from the database. It also has a nifty little "backup database function."

His ultimate goal is basically more interfaces for more kinds of data that weren't in eTools.
