Earthsea to be animated

Now this is an interesting turn of events, Earthsea will be animate by Studio Ghibli. This could be better than the miniseries.

Studio Ghibli (Howl's Moving Castle) has officially announced that it's next project will be Gedo Senki ("Gedo War History"), an adaptation of Ursula K. Le Guin's novel "A Wizard of Earthsea," the first book of the award-winning Earthsea cycle which includes "The Tombs of Atuan," "The Farthest Shore" and "Tehanu" reports Coming Soon.

"Wizard of Earthsea" centers on Ged, who was the greatest sorcerer in all Earthsea. He was once called Sparrowhawk, a reckless youth, hungry for power and knowledge, who tampered with long-held secrets and loosed a terrible shadow upon the world. It's the tale of his testing, how he mastered the mighty words of power, tamed an ancient dragon, and crossed death's threshold to restore the balance.

The film is directed by Hayao Miyazaki's son, Goro, and is scheduled for release July, 2006 in Japan.

It would sort of have to be, wouldn't it? Or at least a lot more faithful to the source material.

I'm not a huge anime fan, but I'm looking forward to this.

Now that's an interesting development. But knowing how anime studios tend to work, it's more likely to be "inspired by" the Earthsea books than an adaptation of them. Of course, that's a pretty good definition of what Sci Fi did in their horrible miniseries, too. :\

This actually sounds pretty cool. I adore the books, and think that Miyazaki would be ideal for the translation; if his son has inherited dad's skill and aesthetic, that could work very well.

AFAIK his son has gone from being the director of the Studio Ghibli Museum to directing this film in one step i.e. no animation experience prior to this. So I'm not holding out too much hope for this.

Agreed. I tried watching it, and could not. I should try again, just so i can say I gave it a fair chance, but.. .whew. What I saw was pretty bad.

The poster looks good, and I hope that the quality is up to par with everything else the studio has released.
