Easy Prone Combat Questions

Well, the rule can't be wrong, because it is the rule. :)

Thanee's right, the rule in CAdv says that standing from prone with a DC 35 tumble check does provoke an AoO.

The Epic rule is the same, but stated less explicitly:

Free Stand: The character can stand up from prone as a free action (instead of as a move-equivalent action).
It doesn't say that the AoO is removed. As usual, standing provokes an AoO.

By the rules you cannot use Tumble for prone movement. However, Andy Collins suggested a house rule to allow a short 5' tumble to avoid AoOs:
Tumbling While Crawling: Though the rules don't say so, there's no reason you can't can tumble 5 feet as a move action when prone. The check DC is 20.

That was Skip Williams.

I don't get his DC 20, though. It should be a move action, DC 15, with a -10 penalty - the house rule would be to allow tumble while crawling. Since crawling lets you move five feet, and Tumble DC 15 lets you move at half speed, you'd need to take the -10 penalty to move at full speed to actually travel 5'.

*begin house rule zone*
So a theoretical move-action tumble attempt would be half-crawl speed (2.5') at DC15, but since 2.5' makes no sense, we must make this action a full-round action attempting 5' of movement. And you could optionally attempt an "accelerated" prone tumble move-action at peak crawl speed (5') at DC25 (or DC15 rolling -10 depending on your perspective), and thus in one round potentially attempt 2 crawling tumbles at DC25 each for a total range of 10'. Right?

As a house rule, I allow a prone 5-ft. step, which costs a move action in addition to the 5-ft. step, and which does not provoke. This pretty much replaces crawling, but crawling is pretty much obsolete, anyways.

Thats just funny,....

"Oh did you see Krunk...can you believe it, he was actually..... crawling"
"That is soooo last edition..."

What I meant is, that crawling is a pointless action, standing up is always the better choice, except in extremely weird situations maybe.

I know it's not in the RAW, but I think there was some 'Sage Advice' article in some Dragon magazine that proposes an "Action Roll". Dc 15 tumble, move 5 feet with provoking AoO (but still be prone) or something. I'll have to find it. I use that rule.

You could use a move action to go from prone to kneeling and another move action to go from kneeling to standing. Takes a full round, but no AoO. And you can still take a 5' step.
