There's no official update booklet for the BoVD, but the Leaflets of Triel (an inofficial, but high-quality IMO) pdf found at the wizards forum, suggest the following:

It's found at the wizards forum? Pray tell, what's that? Do you mean the WotC website?

Can I suggest not making the thing a face hugger. That's too steriotypical of aliens. As a player I don't want to immediately say, "Oh I know this thing is just like aliens!" That intuitively lets them know what is in store. Since I'm not familiar with the Kythons, I can't comment on whether they suffer the same problem. If they look like aliens then avoid them.

Do something related to a mind flayer. Say a cross between and intellect devourer and mind flayer. Picture a brain with four legs and feeding tenticles. It will obviously not be something they've seen before. Have the creature use some mild psionic attacks on the players to trump up the story. It is Eberron after all. Then when it strikes have it attach to the top of the skull, not the face. Play up the mind flayer aspect and convince the players it's trying to feed on their brain and not implant an egg. Perhaps they suffer an intelligence penalty after the feeding attempt. Later in the game.....blamo creature jumping out of players chest.

For simplicity sake if you want to use the stats of another creature like the kython to make less work then go for it. Just don't make it too much of a rip off of aliens. Put a spin to it to keep the players thinking.

I like the Venom aspect of things and think that sounds really cool. You could have the player make will checks to prevent it from making him do abnormal things like bite of a rats head, eat blood, etc. But don't tell him why he's compelled to do certain things. Throw in a "magic item" that looks particularly evil to make them thinks that's causing the mischief. The mine shaft with the last victim is awesome. Have fun.

I'd go with a Slaad as well, although if you're really concerned about the "frogman" appearance, you can easily alter it's description to look more Xenomorphic..

...After all, they're creatures of Pure Chaos. I'd expect a bit of variety in the species, and in fact the v 3.0 entry for Slaadi had a table of random mutations for Slaadi, with everything from "Narrow Mouth" to actual wings..

In fact, you know what would be cool? Slaadi Templates to add to creatures infected/implanted by Slaadi who become Slaadi themselves..

There was an Alien-type creature in one of the Spelljammer MCs (of course). It was called the Ytsan (I think - the word resembled "Nasty" backwards) and its eggs were the same shape, size, and color as gold coins. And so could very easily be mixed in with a treasure hoard the PCs recover in some distant sphere...

I think the Kython are also in the Minatures book as well. If you're not into getting these books just for one critter, then I suggest either a "aliens" template to slap onto several critters that do what you want or go with slaads who have make overs.

Well,

I'm surprised nobody else mentioned this but this sounds like a perfect use for an Aboleth. Especially with the new material from Lords of Madness. It's different enough that your players will not intuit the Aliens plot rip-off. Use the Kythons as the Aboleth's minions. Lots of underwater tunnels and fun to be had.

Just to be clear, the creatures in the Miniatures Handbook are "kruthiks". They're superficially similar to kythons in that they also come in several different life-stages, but they're more simplified - three different kinds of insectile dog-sized killing machines.

Wow, Very nice supplement. I seriously considering using it, for the stats at the very least (although I haven't tracked down slaad stats yet). I will at least be changing the 'look' of the aliens as I don't want the players to be toooo sure of what they're dealing with. I want them to feel like their stuck in an Aliens movie but still be unsure of some of what to expect.

Like I said, I do want it to 'feel' like Aliens, but I hear what you're saying.

Hmmm, I'm now thinking of basing my Aliens on the Aliens: Game Over stats, but with the venom/guyver style parasitic biomorph I first described. The Egg/Spore psionically fascinates potential victims; the Face Hugger/Blob stuns them with a psionic blast & latches onto their neck, psionically pummelling them into unconsciousness while it implants itself in the back of their neck (ala Ga'oulds from Stargate); hours later a vile mass pours back out of the neck to coat & transform the victim's body, transforming the victim into a Drone/Possessed...

How does that sound?

This mixes in elements of a couple of movies, hopefully creating a tense creepy atmosphere, but with enough difference to make the players unsure exactly what to expect. Plus, if the victim becomes a host for the creature (instead a corpse left behind by a Chest Burster), there's a glimmer of hope that the victim might be saved if the parasite can just be forced to abandon it.

I'll have to work on the names though. Not sure Spore, Blob, & Possessed quite fit. I've got no idea what to call the race either.
