I'm glad I'm not the only person to have thought of this. I don't know if I'd run them like that in a "normal" Eberron game, but I've given some serious thought to running a game focused on the Houses, and in that, I'd definitely portray them very much like this.

Actually, I've thought of running a game that is, essentially, Shadowrun in Eberron, where the party are basically "runners" (mercs hiring out their skills to the various Houses).

I call the concept "Khyber-punk." :cool:

Dragonmarked houses: I have two characters from House Orien in my current campaign (Savage Tide), plus a changeling artificer who is pretending to be an unmarked member of House Cannith (the other players don't know this yet).

The two Orien characters are brothers, one marked and one unmarked. I've changed the way the use of the name works - dragonmarked characters are d'Orien, unmarked characters are Orien whether they're born into the house or marry into it. You distinguish between the latter by personal family surname - members of the house from birth carry the surname of their particular family line, while those who marry in use their original surname, and their children use the family name of their "true" Orien spouses.

We have also established that there are individuals within each dragonmarked house who specialise in providing various services to other members of the house - the Orien brothers' father, for instance, established a family business which provided spellcasting services to other heirs of Orien.

Lords of Dust: Because this is a Savage Tide campaign, demons will come into it, but I'm using Keith Baker's suggested conversion ideas:

Demogorgon is envisioned as a powerful unique fiend in Khyber, not as mighty as a true rajah but more powerful than the beings which lead the Lords of Dust. Where the latter seek to free their overlords, Demogorgon wants to assume their power for himself - and the savage tide is the source of power he needs to accomplish this.

Psionics and the Book of Nine Swords: There are no characters in my game who are currently using anything from either of these sources, but the game is still young. It's not too likely, though.

If it is in D&D, it has a place in Eberron: I've already accomodated one player's request to play a slightly unusual kind of wizard by letting him use the anagakok variant specialist wizard from Dragon - his character comes from a tribe in the Shadow Marches - but I would have done that anyway, you know? Everyone else is pretty much based on the setting as-is.
