Eberron: The XTREME D&D Setting!

EXtreme Adventures...

Well...if they print it....I will be there (looking of course)
If they play it...I will be watching (from the background)

How bad can it be???;)

Gosh, it kinda sounds like a bunch of bickering about something so trivial in this thread. It's the name of a class, that's it. If ya don't like it, change it.

What he said.

It's one thing to not be interested in the setting (and I have absolutely no interest in Eberron), but getting your chainmail in a bunch because a PrC has a name you don't like is pretty sensitive. As for me, if I find a really interesting PrC I'll use it whether it's called the Grand Poobah of Leet Magic Skillz or not (if it is, I change the name for my campaign), and if it's unworkable for me and has a wonderfully evocative name, I still don't use it (though I might use the name for something else).

YMMV (and going by some of the previous posts, apparently does).

Most of the bickering about Eberron so far has been about trivial things that are either rare, unique, or tucked away in a far corner of the world so you never have to see them.

Unfortunately, that's really all WotC has given us to look at so far. Sure, they've publicly said that Eberron will be a D&D world, in that everything in D&D is in there. They follow that up with all these glimpses of things that just look silly when taken out of context. This is not good "hype management".

When you get the whole story, it ain't that bad. There are no halflings riding 'raptors down the streets of every city. There is no continent-spanning network of lightning trains. You can't just hop on a flying ship like you were buying a ticket on the Love Boat.

On top of the strange P.R. moves, you've got about 10,997 people who came in at fourth place or worse in the setting contest. I'm sure most of them have moved on with their lives. I'm also sure there are a handful who are certain they should have won and will only be happy in life if they see Eberron fail.

(Please note, I'm not saying anyone here belongs in that last category. I just think it's well within the realm of possiblilty that those people exist, living and posting among us.)

Keith Baker's Clarifications

Ladies and gentlemen, it's time to stop worrying about Eberron being the "extreme" setting. Here's the word from designer Keith Baker:

Thanks for posting the class and information, Nyneve. A few points of clarification:

* There is no "Extreme Ranger". The confusion probably arose because this PrC is especially easy for rangers to enter. The title may conjure images of potions of 'Dew, but it's also the only "extreme" thing in Eberron. I'd hazard a guess that the final name (it went through a variety of changes) came from the idea that the character is exploring especially dangerous and exotic locations, as opposed to peaceful cartography.

* To the best of my knowledge - and I may be wrong - this is the only PrC that specifically requires the use of action points in order to make use of a class ability. As a general rule, action points are an added ability that DMs can choose to ignore. The EE does receive additional action points, and at higher levels gets the chance to reclaim spent action points. And while the idea of an expendible resource may scare folks, in all of my sessions the balance has worked out fairly well.

* The goal is not to be a "munchkin setting" in terms of creating characters with ridiculous power levels. However, *a* goal is to allow players to perform heroic or colorful actions that they might otherwise shy away from because of the poor odds. They can't do these all the time - hence the use of action points - but when things are bad, they can push themselves to (here it comes) extremes.

That's my Keith. Every time I hear something about Eberron that makes me worry about it, he comes and clears up the confusion. I guess that's why I waste so much time compulsively gathering his quotes on my website.

Oddly, *nothing* I've heard about Eberron makes me worry about it.

Quite the contrary, everything I've heard serves to further whet my appetite for what looks to be a fun, interesting setting.

C'mon June!

Now that's great news. I was hoping it was a misunderstanding.
That's a relief... I had visions of a whole line of Extreme Rogues, Extreme Wizards, etc.

Ehr... I'm going to go on a limb here, but how many folks play Rangers as "peaceful cartographers" that never go to "dangerous and exotic locations"?

Meh. I wrote off Eberron because of the hype long before any of this "extreme" language was used. Plus, I'm not into steam punk, trains, and such... It just doesn't suit my taste.

Heh.
