That's an Encounter Level Calculator (ELC, not ECL).

While that is correct, it is also potentially misleading. The character would only have 1d6 because a Drow is a 1 hd creature. If your ECL creature normally has more than 1 hd then you also get those hd as well.

How is that misleading? He specifically asked about a drow, so why would anyone apply that answer (1d6) to a 1st level Rogue/ Tarrasque?

They still keep all previous HD before gaining the class level. That is the way I have always handled it.

They do, but only if it's more than one HD. The ECL will reflect this. In any case, a 3rd level drow would be an ECL of 5. Level and ECL aren't the same thing.
