ECL of a Vampire

Given all the hindrances vampire PC's are incredibly hard to run, running water, no entry without invite, sunlight destruction, repulsed by certain items, need to feed all make it over complicated.

The ability to create vampire spawn makes the class almost unusable, and that's if you not forcing the alignment shift to chaotic evil... Chaotic evil people don't work well in parties.

But even with all the drawbacks, I'd make the ECL no lower than the +10 recommended by Soldarin's page.

And remember, regardless of number of attacks per round, only one energy drain attack is allowed per action.

IIRC, the DMG says ECL +5.

What one thinks it should be, however, is not under the auspices of this forum... :D

The idea of a situation that would require the ECL of a vampire has not come up in my campaign... so I could be wrong... but I don't think so... :D

Are you just making an NPC and wanna make him like the rest of the players, trentonjoe?

I am trying to make a system that allows vampires to gain powers slowly as opposed to getting all the benefits at once. I remembered them being ECL 6 so l gave it 6 levels. If you are interested I posted it here:

I am thinking of "infecting" one of my PC and seeing what happens!

Remember that for purposes of turning or rebuking, the closest undead are affected first. This could make things awkward for the vampire PC, the first time they come across a group of other undead.

Fighter PC: "Look out! Spectres!"
Cleric PC: "No problem. By the light of Pelor, begone!"
Vampire PC: "Aaaagh, I'm melting! What a world, what a world..."

I thought it was weakest first, then closest if same effective HD? Or am I wrong for the 4th time in a single thread? :D

Check this page, under Range. "A combatant turns the closest turnable undead first."

If you roll high enough to affect a lich, and a lich is standing 5' away, then the lich is the first thing affected. Even if there are a thousand Fine (1hp) zombies standing 10' away.
