Actually, 3e vampires do not need to feed.

Actually, according to the Ravenloft Campaign Setting Core Rulebook (pub. by Sword & Sorcery Studios), Vampires do need to feed, on no fewer than 4 Constitution points of blood per night to remain in pefect "health" -- less than this and they suffer one "negative level" (another exception to the rules for most Undead) until they reach one level/HD, at which point they're a ravenous beast consumed totally by bloodlust. Each night of regular feeding erases 1 "negative level." Blood from fresh corpses and non-humanoids is half as "nutritious" -- a vampire would need to drain 8 Contitution points worth of blood from an animal in one night to maintain it's perfect "health."

As I said, though, those rules are for Vampires in the Ravenloft setting as presented by Sword & Sorcery Studios. Which makes perfect sense to me, and were I to DM a game with Vampire PC's, I'd certainly implement that rule.

That's fine, too. I was pointing out information from the SRD.

Cheers,

Just wait another month, and the whole ECL thing will finally be put to rest as Savage Species comes out (I hope!). There's even going to be a way to break down an ECL creature so it can gradually "grow" into it's full form. That way people can play a Centaur or Ogre at FIRST level.
