ECL of an Awakened Raven?

Limper

First Post
Whats the ECL of one of these? It has 2d8 HD and some feats and skills.... but it has a -10 to Str and +2 to Dex.

Any thoughts? Should it just be run as if it were just starting out even with the extra Hps?

Thank you for your assistance.

Dont forget: it has NO hands.

++Fly
+Dex
+Tiny

-----Hands
----Str

Character will not be able to be a good Spellcaster(Needs metammagic still-spell and higher Slots to cast anything).

Character will not be able to be a good Non-Spellcaster, can't draw weapons and is not able to do most Skills(Although a raven sneak- attack might look cool).

All in all: Ecl+0 at most if not less(If this is possible at all).

Masters of the Wild has a feat called Natural Spell so you can cast useing the natural limbs of an animal... this and Eschew Materials would handle the cast OK.

I would agree with you Lurker, I don't think there is a category for - ECL's (interesting idea though).

to take Natural spell you need to have Wis 13 and be able to wildshape, with this awakened Raven are you REALLY going to take 5 levels of druid just to get this feat so you can cast spells in a form other than your natural one?

I'm trying to figure out how to handle ECL for an awakened snail that will be a cohort. Obviously less than ECL 1. Not sure how to handle it, especially with cohort level limit.

I'm leaning toward making it EL 1, and letting it swap unusable feats like weapon and armor proficiencies for other feats that are useful.

A similar approach might work for your Raven.

Obsolete: Dont have much of a choice really... maybe just use an estrapolation of the feat.

Soldarin: +2! Have you read the stats on a raven? It has a Str of 1... in 3e thats a BIG disadvantage... add to that they aint that tough in any other aspect either.

Tobold Hornblower: A snail? Did the Druid get really drunk opn night? Ravens are rather gimpy... but snails make them look like powerhouses.

Before the ELH ALL ecls are at least equal to the number of HD.

The low Str more than compensates for the flying and the small size. Add in the lack of hands, and the difficulties with equipment and you wind up with an ECL lower than 2, so it's +2 (2 HD creature).

Basically your raven relies on spells to do his fighting for him (no Str, no hands for bows). Playing a Raven seems a silly choice for a combat heavy game. In a roleplaying heavy game it can have some great advantages, though (who would suspect the raven of eavesdropping?).
