Eclipse?

Has anyone used Eclipse at all by Distant Horizons Games? It's a d20 supplement that allows you to point buy everything. It is one of the most imaginative, well-written, and witty rpg books I've read.

I have half a mind to set up a PbP and say "everyone download this book for free and come back to me in a week with characters".

Any experiences with it at all?

Yeah, I bought a hardcopy a while back. I agree with most of your assessment except that the author stumbles over conversational English in a few places near the front of the book, which creates slight confusion as to how some rather basic things works (such as the differences between different types of points). Once you get past those first poorly explained fifteen pages or so, the instructions are much more clear and concise.

Well, there are a selection of character samples (including a L1-20 level by level build), campaign worksheets from several different campaigns, and other materials for it Here and the shareware versions are linked in my Sig if anyone wants them. We've been having a lot of fun with it (starting with the playtest games) - but you do have to keep an eye on the powergamers. I think half the online example characters are examples of "the most you'd want to let a player get away with".

If I'm reading rightly, a first level character should have 54 CP (24 from Level 0, and 24 from Level 1 + 6 as a bonus) and 3x (Int bonus) SP. Is that right? I only ask as the sample 3rd Level character has 96 SP (which would seem to be 12 short).

The generic sample characters all seem to go by the base CP, without any extras from bonus feats, per-level modifiers, or disadvantages. Leaves them open for customization or use as a basis for player characters I suppose. The two personally-named sample characters do seem to have bonus CP included at the end.

That's what I eventually surmised. Thanks for the confirmation. :D
Now to find a way to use the damn thing!
