D&D 3.x Edition Experience - Did/Do you Play 3rd Edtion D&D? How Was/Is it?

Well in terms of that, if I wanted more grounded fantasy I had lot of (to my POV) better choices.

I envy you then since I find most other games lacking in the sheer character and adventure mechanics that makes 3E PF1 so rich.

There I agree. When I want more grounded fantasy I tend towards GURPS, or RQ or RM. But I do like some 3e noncombat mechanics better than those in the above games.

Sneaking in and placing barrels - smoke powder, fire wine, oil, or water - to enhance your spells once the fight starts.

The one time we got to truly high level characters (20-21st level) was in AD&D, when we did all of G123D123Q1 without leveling up, because our DM’s rule was you could only level up in a safe space with time and resources available. Jumping from like 11th to 21st and then retiring isn’t so bad. I keep my old PC’s from that campaign nearly 40 years ago as high level shadowy NPC’s in my campaigns.

I think one thing BG1 got right (it got many things right) is having 12th as the top level. That’s about right in any edition.

Kindof Like the NWN practice of setting up a bunch of traps in advance and then tricking the enemy into running into them. Got it.
