CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!

My son is 10 months old now, but I'm not one for normal names (He's Galen Sheen, I'm Merak Alan) so I can't help you there. Of course, I did choose based on my ancestry (Irish/Scottish). My suggestion is to look at your ancestral homeland and choose a traditional name that is not common, but not especially odd either - that's how we got Galen.

You have embarked on a journey that is more wonderful and terrifying than you can imagine. Treasure each moment.

oh, and teach your kid D&D at age 5.

Why not just swap and use the masculine versions? Nicholas Aaron, etc.

But I'm one for that kind of symmetry :-) You may not be.

That's actually pretty clever, Xeriar. The only problem is that my step-dad's name is Nicholas, so my wife might have an aversion towards naming our son after her dad. I don't know. Normally, imho, the son should name their son after their dad, not the daughter. So, that would be kind of strange.

My dad's name is Jessie Raymond, but my wife hates both of those names.

Congratulations! Being a father is a wonderful thing.

My choice for a boy name is Jacob Beowulf. I'm not kidding. But we didn't have a boy and my wife promises me that if we did, she was sure as hell not going to let me name him that. We'll see if I can wear her down with my inimatable charm before we have our next child.

If I may make a suggestion, start lobbying your wife now for the notion that after the child is born that you each still get one night a week that you can do whatever you want and the other person takes care of the baby. Your wife might want an evening each week to go shopping or take a class or something like that.

And you of course will go play D&D on your night.

My wife has already told me that I can't game for a solid month after our kid is born. :( But, one of the guys I game with said that when his first was born, that he couldn't game for 3 months, so I don't feel so bad.

I suggested to my wife that any normal name like Bob, or Bill becomes completely fresh and new with a glottal stop. So, B'ob, or B'ill would be quite unique, and would also probably ensure that the kid has years of therapy.

I also like umlauts. So, something like Böb would be pretty interesting, too.

I've always thought my grandmother's maiden name, Reeve, would be a good male name. My wife thinks her mother's maiden name, Gunther, would be a good first name for a boy.

Our son was named Nicholas Arthur, and our daughter is Katharine Miranda.

In any case, congrats, and get your gaming and reading in now! Your time will no longer be your own come mid-May!

Congratulations!

Well, my son's name is Nathaniel James (Nathaniel makes for several nicknames including Nathan, Nate, and Niel). I happen to prefer long names that are somewhat dignified (for when they're older) but which can be shortened when they're little. Other names we strongly considered:

Benjamin
Alexander
Matthew
Andrew
Timothy

And BTW, the wife and I are expecting a daughter (We think) in January/February - if it is indeed a girl, it will be Leilani Mae.

And FWIW, I consider pet names much differently... if I get a cat, its name will be one of the following:

Molybdenum
Praesiodymium
Dysprosium

--The Sigil
