I have to speak up for the Mongol method if you are really looking to cut down on your logistical support issues.
Not only can you go a long way on yogurt, blood, and assorted preserved hunted and gathered goods, but remounts make it a lot easier to travel long distances.
Mongols could cover amazing marching distances because their armies were essentially herds of horses with a higher than usual number of well armed herders.
That and looting, lots of looting and foraging.
