As for why they might want fewer classes: if each class has a lot of powers, feats and talent tress to choose from plus 30 levels of support, they may taking a lot more space than in 3.5. This is total speculation of course.

I believe that was more or less the explanation given very early on. Each class gets a significantly larger page count than in the past ... which limits the number of classes rather sharply.

If the essence of the Controller is the ability to make area attacks, then the Dervish could make something like a martial controller - run past your enemies attacking each one in turn.

Since the Dervish is a two weapon wielder, they could make it into the 4e ranger tree is they wanted to allow the ranger some controller options.

The essence of the controller is control of the battlefield. Area damage is just a subset of that. Reshaping the terrain, debuffing, funneling opponents, dividing opponents, that sort of stuff.

The mechanics would be easy enough, but making a martial controller that actually SEEMS martial is the hard part. Magic makes for easy fluff text.

This is my guess, based on the Swordmage blog posts, my own love for bards, and (of course) wild and baseless speculation.

I could not (for the life of me) figure a credible Martial Controller, however

edit: Except for Chuck Norris, of course... but since Chuck Norris can roundhousekick Tarrasques to the ground by level 1... what can the rest of the party do to contribute?

But that's the point, it's battlefield control. Once the Tarrasque is down, it's still not out...now the party can mount the Tarrasque and Chuck Norris can drive it like a extended cab pick-up...
