I think the key would be to use strategy. Don't always put them up in a face-to-face battle; give them enemies with tactics that might put them out of the reach of the fighters. If they PCs are invading a monster's base, for example, it is safe to argue that if the monster has any kind of intelligence they would have prepared for it (maybe with murderholes, or some sort of elevation advantage, such as shooting arrows from a balcony or scaffold of what-have-you).
