I have a problem with wizards automatically possessing a spell books without having to pay for it. The problem is that they then have a lot more money out of that abstract 100 starting gold that they otherwise wouldnt have. I think the a characters total possessions at the start of first level shouldnt be more than 100GP. If it is, then something is broken.

It's not broken.

1. It's not that much money. By the time you're level 2 you should have earned 145g. It goes up from there.

2. They have one partially because they can't have any spells without a book or rituals. That's why a Cleric gets a Ritual book for free as well. A Fighter needs nothing to store his knowledge of fighting, the same counts for most classes. The Wizard and Cleric though need books for their class functions.

Also Fighters and Paladins have their own build in advantages. their armour for example is ridiculously cheap, Plate armour for 50g? Instead of 1500?

3. Different does not exclude being equal to each other
