The key is supposed to be that only the PCs find out how to stop the EE in time. But, yes, it's a hard concept to pull off and the book seems only partly successful (from the previews, of course).

Wasn't it Bill Shatner in classic trek bloopers that placed his hands on that stupid glowing orb from Spock's Brain and joked "never fear, Zargon is here!" ?
