Eldritch Might Bards

Does anyone here play the Book of Eldritch Might version of the bard in a "standard" D&D game? What are your opinions on how it compares to the PHB version?

And please... no bard haters need post here. There are plenty other threads for that.

I wanted to post because I'm a former bard hater who never saw the point of the D&D core class, who finds the Eldritch Might bard to be absolutely worthwhile, though I've never seen it in play.

power wise they seem about the same, and that is about equal to the other classes. THe EM Bard does ghave some nice versatility and spells that actually feel more Bard like.

Do you just mean universal bard haters or can Eldritch Might bard haters apply?

IMO, it does have the advantage of merging bardic music and magic into a self consistant whole.

That said, I feel that spellnotes are just spells under another name, and find most of the mod pointless for that reason. Further, it buries the bard deeper into the "Celtic spellsinger rut", when I feel in fact that the bard needs to be changed to be more general, if anything, allowing it to take the role of a general oral historian/tribal chanter/what have you.

The EM bard rocks. My wife played one from 1st-27th level. It is definitely how the 3e bard should have been done. It has far more flavor and is actually useful in the game as something other than a support character.

I have generally found a lot of Monte Cook's stuff to be gangbusters.

But on the variant bard, I have to admit I was disappointed.

I just don't think it played (no pun, intended) true to the idea of the class as a magical musician.

But I'm definately in the minstrel-bard camp, rather than the lore-bard camp.

Maybe someone with another perspective feels differently.

It's nifty, but it doesn't feel any different from a normal 'caster (IMO). I've only played with one for a few sessions, and he was blinded quickly, so I can't say much about them in-game.
