Eldritch; Who's Played it/What Are Your Thoughts?

I just got the email about Goodman's Eldritch rpg being available in PDF. I didn't even know about it til now.

So, who has bought and DM'd/played in it? Tell me your thoughts, I'm considering buying this as a b-day present to myself.

Don't know anything about the system, but text like "With no restrictive archetypes..." (from the email) always puts me off. It implies "fantasy heartbreaker" to me, by defining it by how it is different from D&D. That's probably unfair coming from Goodman, but I wish we could get away from it.

I believe it came out the middle of last week, so the population of people who've played it is probably very small. I have seen one of the designers and a play-tester post over on RPG.net though.

I think you are reading too much into that. They did a fine job of phrasing. How would you have said it?

I suppose saying "With our system, you can tailor your character to fit any concept you like..." or something similar would be better. Emphasize the positive, not the negative. Even if it's exaggerating somewhat. *shrug*

(.....we really need a 'shrug' smiley. -_-)

I haven't seen it, but one of the FDG crew got the PDF and said he likes what he's seen so far. I'm waiting to pick up the print version at my FLGS.

As I said, my initial reaction was likely unfair, considering the publisher.

What would I do? Emphasize the positive, as said above. Don't tell me what the game isn't - tell me what it is.

It's like those old Talislanta ads - "No elves..." Okay, we get there's no elves, so what do you have?

In this case they do go on to describe something about the system in positive terms, but whenever I see text like that I read it as a not-so-subtle jab at D&D, and that colours my first impression of the game.

I would've said what the game is, not what it isn't. If "restrictive archtypes" is a swipe at D&D, then it's like saying "the most popular rpg in the world? We're not it." I mean, hurrah for bucking the trend, but alot of people like restrictive archtypes.

I'm not trying to comment on the game, just the ad copy.
