Electric backpack

This would actually be great for search-and-rescue and backcountry rangers, if it can provide enough energy to power the batteries for an 800mHz radio (and doesn't weigh too much) and GPS unit.
And the 21st Century cross country backpacker.

I dunno 'bout that - when I put on my pack, the last thing I want is to be connected to anything other than what's immediately around me. :)
The question remains though: Are you a cross country backpacker that can't live without a cell phone or other devices that require electricity to use or charge up?

Not in the slightest - I find cell phones in the backcountry intrusive, to say nothing of iPodsTM and other consumer electronics. I use a map and compass, so if I carry a GPS unit it's only for severe weather where I can't see landmarks or for cross-country travel at night (e.g., the desert).

Well that is good to know. I'm a purist when it comes down to man and nature. Anything a person can survive without stays home.

Then that all depends on what you think you can survive without :p

They can build this, but still no flying car?!?!
Riiight. It's bad enough we still have so many car accidents on the ground, which is more than any airplane accidents in any day or any year.

While the electric backpack sound useful for hikers who can (and will) get lost (especially in Hawaii), isn't there some portable hand-cranked power battery generator that I can connect to any cell phone? I mean if they can make hand-cranked radio... Hello, Nokia? Are you listening?
