What about piezoelctricity?

It would seem that Dwarves or Gnomes would be all over that!

(Which would let you get out those Dwarves w/shock gun minis...)
My homebrew is experiencing an Industrial Age in its infancy. Elves have become more urbanized and are viewed as the leaders in the advancement in technological and technomagical advances. Dwarves are viewed as the industrial engineers of the game. With the two races helping each other out, skyscrapers are first starting to appear.

Skyscrapers?

I'd think that dwarves would go down...er...build subterranean superstructures first.

I say that because of natural technological marvels like african termite mounds (which have a self-regulating temperature and water condensation collection sites) and access to geothermal energy.

Have you seen the movie Stardust (or read the excellent graphic novel by Neil Gaiman)? In it they have an airship (as much a blimp with a sea-going vessel as the gondola) that "fishes" lightning from storm clouds and collects them in something that might be a souped up leyden jar.

Collecting electricity in this way could mean a thriving electric trade, and would be rife with possibilities for gaming.

Note that this is pretty far off from "scientific," but can at least be described as non-magical (though certainly fantastic!).

Part of the background of my homebrew is that Dwarves got sick and tired of living underground due to huge battles between them and other evil subterranean races (mostly Drow (which are completely revamped in flavor and mechanics)) resulting in massive death tolls.

Easily modified for scientific means though. And that is an excellent idea for another part of my homebrew: the Elven Sky Empire. They'd need electricity on those portal interconnected sheared off and inverted mountain top cities (yoinked from Forgotten Realms partially; the old Netheril Empire).

How about enslaved Xeg-yi? (or whatever they're called).

Making an electromagnet out of an Iron Golem?

Or getting your golems (or mindless undead) to work hand-crank generators...forever?

Hmmm...The Necro-Electric Power Company!

I think Pbartender's and Enkhidu's ideas are spot on for my homebrew. ;)

Exactly!

Another trope on the piezoelectricity- a community of Dwarves living near a sea cliff with crashing surf could use sea power to provide the mechanical energy to stress the crystals.
