Elemental Immunities and Bypassing Them

A think that I like a little less than overcoming resistances or immunities is probably changing the damage type of spells (or powers, speaking of 4E).

Turning a Fireball into a Frostball seems like a logical thing from the game stats perspetive, except when you look closer and the spell still burns or melts stuff. I can accept adding energy types, though. That I can see - adding an energy type, even an "opposing" one (like Cold to Fire) can still retain the old spells effects.
But changing energy types is more than just changing the damage descriptor. It is changing the entire nature of the spell, it does something completely different now.

Of course, even there are exceptions. If you create a Fireball by creating a portal to the Eternal Fires of Pyrotania, you might be able to create a Coldball by creating a portal to the Frozen Wastes of Cryotania. But still, that Coldball won't burn paper and melt gold. ;)
