Elf Scout to Dervish, with one small snag...

Dervish gives Martial Weapon Proficiency, right? So, you could take Weapon Focus (any slashing you can use) to fill the prereq, then start using scimitars after you grab that first level of Dervish. Sure, you're sacrificing a feat, but lost of prestige classes require you to grab some sub-par feats to qualify.

Of course, this plan falls apart if Dervish doesn't give Martial Weapon Proficiency; it's a favorite prc of mine, even got me to motivate a DM to start-up a campaign so I could make one, but my builds have included either fighter or ranger, so I never paid attention to what proficiencies the Dervish gets.

Hmmm... I assume you aren't a Wood Elf - their favored class is Ranger.

How many levels of Scout do you have? Is it feasible to take that many (minus 1) levels of Fighter?

I wondered about this solution for you, also, except that I would recommend Swashbuckler instead of Fighter. It would give you your Scimitar proficiency and Weapon Finesse, as well as better skill points, Insightful Strike, and not wasting med/heavy armor prof. (which you cannot wear as a Scout).

EDIT: I also like the Sickle recommendation. As a simple weapon, the Sickle is actually pretty cool- you can Trip with it, remember.

He's worried about multi-classing XP penalties. A PrC doesn't have that problem, fighter does. Yet another silly thing about those multi-classing rules. Mark

Yep, pretty surprising to me that DM's across-the-board haven't house-ruled favored classes away entirely.

The character's stilll 1st level, only played once. I'm a long way from having the requisite +5 BAB, so I'll have time to figure something out. And of course, as stated in the thread's subject line, it is just a small snag. It won't cripple the character.

Sorry, "Dervishes gain no proficiency with any weapon or armor." (CW p26)

Huh. I thought most of the warrior-type prestige classes handed out martial weapons, but I guess not. Odd, since I'm pretty sure Radiant Servant of Pelor does provide MWP.

In that case, multiclassing with fighter is probably the best bet, and it gives out a few more feats- Dervish with Weapon Specialization is a wonderful thing.

If you are doing a 1 level dip for martial weapon proficiency, go barbarian. The +10 movement stacks with the scout and dervish speed increases, and the rage 1/day gives an option for those situations where it's not feasible to dance. The extra skill points and hit points don't hurt either.

For 1 level, that would be a good idea- particularly the fast movement. I was thinking of a fighter/scout 4/3 (or thereabouts) to avoid multiclassing penalties.
