Elmore cover art for final issue of Dragon

I was never a huge fan of Mr. Elmore's art, but it is very fitting that his work, which graced the covers of so many great issues, should be the cover of the finale' of the greatest gaming mag ever.

I know I'm in the minority here but I can't stand Elmore's art.

I don't know enough of his art off the top of my head, but I personally don't care for the cover. I can't really put my finger on why... I don't care for the dragon, I strongly dislike the chick, and I hate the sky.

Much of his newer work (and some of his older work ... the red box comes to mind) portrays great dynamism. His new stuff is so naturalistic and painterly, I really like it. Maybe with this particular piece he's consciously referencing his older, more static style deliberately.

As a professional, let me say this: Larry Elmore is one of the best skyscape painters ever.

It's a nice sky, I'll give it that, but I think I've finally figured out why I dislike the piece so much... It just doesn't feel right to me. I don't know why, but it just doesn't look like a Dragon Magazine cover to me. The tone is just too... wistful, I guess. Which I suppose is warranted, but it still falls flat for me.

Beautiful, beautiful picture. A crowning work for the last issue of an Icon of an Era. I also like the staff that's "part dragon-staff and part Winchester rifle." :)

Just beautiful. Elmore's done a superlative job here and I think you'd be hard pressed to find a more fitting piece for the last issue of Dragon.
