Elrond

Why Cleric? Because he can heal?

What about Bard? Doesn't he spend most of his time telling stories and singing?

Actually, I was thinking the same thing. In D&D terms, Elrond is more likely to have bard levels than cleric levels. Because:

1. Bardic knowledge: Is there anything about Middle-earth this guy doesn't know?
2. He can sing and play the harp. Well, if being raised by Maglor has any effect.
3. Elves often use music (especially singing) to work magic.
4. Bards can heal too.
5. Speak Language as a class skill. It is likely that Elrond knows: Quenya, Sindarin, Adunaic, Westron, Dwarven runes, and Black Speech. It's highly probable that his Intelligence bonus is high enough, but he probably knows more than that would indicate.
6. Really max ranks in many of the bard's class skills: Appraise, Concentration, Decipher Script, Diplomacy, Gather Information, Knowledge (all of them), Listen, Perform (harp and singing), Sense Motive, Speak Language, Spellcraft. It's also likely he'd have high ranks in: Balance, Climb, Hide, Jump, Move Silently, Swim, and Tumble.
7. Bard spells he'd know: detect magic, know direction, read magic, comprehend languages, cure light wounds, identify, cure moderate wounds, delay poison, tongues, cure serious wounds, dispel magic, remove curse, speak with animals, detect scrying, legend lore, neutralize poison, speak with plants, dispel magic (greater), analyze dweomer, heroes' feast

The only drawback: the alignment restriction. Elrond is totally LG. However, he'd totally have aristocrat, paladin, fighter, and loremaster levels too. And probably druid, if he can make the Bruinen overflow.

Cleric, yeah. Although he is famed as being mighty amoung both men and elves I wouldn't actually hand him divine ranks... But he is almost certainly an epic character.

Remember the Phial of Gladrial that is given to Frodo which contains the light of Earendil "Most beloved of the elves"? The light of that star actually comes from the Silmaril bound to the brow of Earendil the Mariner who alone of mortal blood sailed to the land of the Valar and was set to sail amoungst the stars to prevent him from returning to the lands of men. That star is Elrond's dad....

So yeah, epic kind of runs in the family.

And as billd91 said, he's the great-grandson of Beren and Luthien, who wandered into Morgoth's stronghold, put him to sleep with magic, and waltzed out with a Silmaril. Can you imagine the pressure on Elrond and Elros when they were young? "When I was your age, I'd already made a name as a great hero. Everyone in our family does, young man! Now get out of bed, tidy your room, and do something like defeating Sauron!"

By which time, of course, you may as well start from a closer source, to make things easier for yourself.

Agreed.

LOL.
Man, the pressures that come from having over-achieving parents.

He has massive magical power, partly derived from his ring of power - the water one I think, given his control of the river. I'd make him a 10th level B/X Elf Lord, but with a different spell selection than D&D M-U.

Actually it was Vilya, the Ring of Air. Also, he's part Maia. Y'know, Gandalf's "extended family."

I sit corrected. That indicates even greater power then - Gandalf needed the ring of fire to do a Produce Flame, but Elrond can have the river sweep away the Black Riders all on his own. :)

paladin

Hi,
I say Paladin, simply because it feels right to me. And if the details of class vs. The Books (or The Movies) don't fit perfectly, I am ok with that.

Just to emulate some of his magical abilities, I'd say he'd need something like: Bard 15/Paladin 20/Ranger 20/Loremaster 10. He'd likely also have Elf paragon abilities.

Of course, the alignment restrictions would make this thoroughly impossible.
