Elusive Target and Power attack

I hava a question form my last section:

One of my players used power attack feat to hit a BBEG that has the elusive target feat, and, obviusly, the damage bonus didn't aply.

The question is:
1- Does the character knows that the damge from the Power attack feat is being negated?
2- Can he understand that it's being negated by the elusive target feat and therefore stop using the feat?

In terms of game rules the player knew my npc had the feat, but does his character knew?

I guess its also good to mention that we're playing in Dragonlance, in a low -magic, very realistic kind of game...

What do you guys think?

I would say that the character knows that his attacks aren't doing the amount of damage they normally do. However, wether or not he knows its specifically from Elusive Target depends on just how "elusive" you describe the BBEG's actions.

The DM should, at the very least, describe the outcome of the blow. That description should hold clues that the PA damage was avoided, IMO.

Not entirely obviously...though I'll assume that the BBEG had the character as his Dodge target.

As for the player noticing, I'm with the other guys. Description should give a big clue. "Yep, he just sorta danced out of the way of the blow, only getting winged."

DM: "As you connect with all your might behind your swing, BBEG seems to roll with the swing a bit and this seems to offset the damage from your brute strength."
Player: "BOOOOO!!!!"
DM: <smiles>
