In the deep woods of the world live the Crystanali, or the “wild” elves. No different physiologically from their Silvani counterparts which humans are more familiar with, the Crystanali live a more primal existence by choice. It is this group of elves that are most likely to become barbarians.
Variant: Elf of the Deep Wood
The Crystanali are quite unlike their human counterparts in battle. Rather than becoming more resolved and durable in battle the elves of the deep wood enter a whirling frenzy that cuts down foes that dare to battle them in combat.
Class Skills: An Elf of the Deep Wood loses Ride and Handle Animal as class skills. They are replaced by Balance and Tumble.
Class Features
An elf of the deep wood has all of the standard barbarian abilities except as noted below.
Whirling Frenzy: Elves of the deep wood enter a rage known as the whirling frenzy. Its bonuses are different from the standard rage ability outlined in the Player’s Handbook and are outlined below:
The character gains a +4 rage bonus to strength and a +2 dodge bonus to armor class and reflex saves. He may elect make one extra attack in a round at his highest base attack bonus, but if he does he takes a –2 penalty on all other attacks made that round including attacks of opportunity which might arise before his next action.
At 11th level the bonuses for the whirling frenzy increase to +6 rage bonus to strenth and +3 dodge bonus to AC and to reflex saves. At 20th level the bonuses increase to +8 and +4 respectively.
The elves of the deep wood don’t gain indomitable will at 14th level, but instead gain evasion (as per the rogue class ability) while in the whirling frenzy.
Design Note. The Whirling Frenzy first appeared in Unearthed Arcana. It is particularly fitting when paired with the elven race since their +2 racial bonus to dexterity pairs much more favorably to whirling frenzy then their racial –2 to constitution pairs with the standard rage of the Player’s Handbook.
