Elven thinblades: evolved from rapier or longsword?

Are Elven thinblades improved rapiers or improved longswords? I'm using the weapon group variant from UA. Should they be in the exotic light blades or exotic heavy category?

I would say light. That seems to be the point of a thin blade.

A little of both, actually. They deal 1d8 damage and have a threat range of 18-20, and they can be used with the Weapon Finesse feat (although they are exotic weapons).

Judging by the description and picture, however, I can't think of any practical reason why the elven thinblade does more damage than a regular rapier, other than the fact that it has the word "elven" in the name (because as we all know, anything made by the elves is teh uber).

The fact that they are finessable immediately puts them into the light category, in my view.

I was talking less about the mechanics and more about the weapon in the world-whether it came about from elves modifying the longsword or the rapier.
