OPEN TYPE FONTS!
While it still irks me that I don't know what the problem is, I have found another temporary fixit! In fact, it may be the way I go for a good long while. Open Type Fonts! Woo-hoo!
I have Illustrator, which comes with a set of Open Type fonts, including Myriad. I happen to love Myriad for sans serif body text, so when I was working on the charity pdf this morning I decided to see how it would look. I knew Myriad was kept in a different location, other than the main Fonts folder on the C drive, because it came with the Illustrator app. When I looked at the Myriad file and saw that it wasn't True Type, I wondered how easy or difficult it would be to embed it.
It embedded it no problem, first time out the gate.
Along with Myriad I have a version of Garamond, Caslon, and several other very appealing body text fonts. I think I'll be using them more often. Bye bye...Gil Sans.. :\
Oh and Hal - you can get that extension at the Quark website. I don't know where exactly in the website - you have to do a search and wander around the labyrinthine mess of related articles. Good luck. And try an open type font - see if it works for you, too. (email me if you don't have any)
