Embracing AI in TTRPGs - Enhancing, Not Replacing, Creativity

Hey everyone,

Just posted a new article on OptionalRule.com about the potential positive uses of AI in our beloved hobby. I know AI is a hot-button issue right now, but I tried to take a balanced approach.

Key points:
  • AI doesn't have to replace creativity - it can enhance it
  • Possible uses include lore summarization, VTT management, and advanced random tables
  • AI could big a big help with character and campaign management
  • The goal is to reduce admin work, not replace human storytelling
I'd love to hear your thoughts. What AI applications would you find useful in your games? Any concerns?

Any tool can be used in ethically sound, or unsound, ways. The thing is that when there's easy profit to be had, we collectively have very little confidence in ethics winning the day.
For corporations, sure. But ethics left the room well before AI was developed when it comes to corporations.

There is still a personal component. How individual fans will use AI, and what benefits we might find in the tools ourselves. I posted this on Reddit, just for the mini-game of replies. The worst takes are clearly conrolling the discussion space, at least online.

However, a number of studies show that people are using AI in large numbers, they just wont admit it. It's worth a discussion, even if people are afraid to talk about it.

None. Unless I'm playing a solo CRPG, in which case the AI is just the CPU running the background math, which is...the point of a solo CRPG.

Ones like "Get out of the way of Progress (tm)." and "It's going to happen anyway, just accept it."?

Sure, people use it to generate a character portrait. I've done so thousands of times now. I was never, ever, going to pay someone to do so, and now its whatever.

I also wont support a company, nor would I do this myself, attempting to profit off of AI generated content, because I understand that without people getting paid, the whole system degrades, and I dont want artists to have to go work on a construction site, or a pavement crew, when they have trained their lives to be artists.

Its like discussion around AI 'written' books. Its just regurgitation, and I'll pass.

The fact that these two statements are made, one right after the other, has made this post absolutly worth it.

Well thats the issue is it not?

Do people use these toosl? Sure, they play around with it. I've got coworkers who have already screwed up in a major way with ChatGP. Well done boys. My current avatar is generated. I've got a whole series because I wanted to prove a point.

Does that mean these tools should be embraced for corporate for profit use, at the expense of actual people, with actual families?

Of course not.

It was an adventure it clicking 'create' to see what the tools would regurgitate, a reflection of western internet 'ideal', and...then put away because its not really useful beyond maybe getting a character portrait.
