Ok, here goes:

Ingredients:
Key Phrase: "Mighty oaks from little acorns grow"
Other Ingredients: a silver ring, a wooden toy, "Like a moth to flame"

NPC:
Rollan Glashen
(Male Human Commoner 1, 15 years old)

Other important figures:
Tybius Glashen
(Rollan’s father. Male Human Expert 5.)
Elias Glashen (Rollan’s uncle, Tybius’ brother. Male Human Wizard 3)

History:
Several years ago in Mor's End there lived a remarkable toymaker named Tybius Glashen who had the ability to enchant his toys with wonderful magic. Some of them could fly, or talk, or dance. He made dolls with eyes that sparkled like rainbows, and clothes that seemed to glow with starlight.

Every child in Mor's End wanted one of Tybius’ toys, and business was excellent. In time, he attracted the attention of a beautiful young woman, Reilla, who after a whirlwind courtship became his wife. It seemed Tybius’ life was charmed, and the folk of the city loved him dearly.

But all was not well.

Tybius’ brother, Elias, quiet these many years, had been harboring secret jealously and resentment. Elias was greedy, and longed to have Tybius’ financial success, but having little inclination to seek his own. Elias did not possess the gift of creating magical toys – that gift seemed slated for Tybius alone. Tybius also wore the family signet ring, a constant reminder the he was the firstborn and that Elias was a mere nothing. He nurtured his resentment in secret, growing to truly hate his brother.

In time, Reilla bore a son, Rollan Glashen, and Tybius joyfully commissioned auguries to determine his child's qualities. He found out, to his delight, that Rollan possessed the same gift of enchantment, and would be able to carry on his father's craft in future years. The seer also uttered a prophecy over the child's crib, "Mighty oaks from little acorns grow." Tybius hailed this as foretelling that the child would indeed grow to be a great toymaker.

Hearing of the happy birth sent the mind of Elias working in sinister circles. Eventually, he concocted a dark and hideous plan. He would kidnap the newborn Rollan and raise him as his own - and when the child grew old enough, he would force Rollan to create wonderful toys like Tybius’, but for only his own profit. The only obstacle was Tybius and Reilla, and the evil mind of Elias came to only one conclusion - they would have to be eliminated.

The next night, the wife went out on a stroll with Rollan and Tybius stayed home working. Elias showed up at the door with gifts to welcome the new baby. Pleased that Elias should think of such a touching gesture, Tybius invited him to stay for a while. He, after all, suspected nothing. Tybius invited Elias up to his attic workshop for a drink. They talked for a while, and suddenly, Elias simply snapped. When Tybius' back was turned, Elias grabbed an awl from the nearby workbench and stabbed him through the heart.

In his last dying breath, Tybius stumbled to the attic window, where he could see Reilla below, returning with Rollan, and shouted "Go! Flee! Elias has gone mad and slain me!" and threw something down to her. Then he collapsed, and his wife knew he was dead. She picked up the item he had thrown her - it was his silver signet ring. Knowing herself and her child were in danger, and being no fool, Reilla turned and fled.

Unbeknownst to anyone, however, Tybius spent his last energy on one final enchantment. As his life energy slipped out of him, he somehow managed to direct it into a nearby small wooden toy - a toy soldier to be precise. Animating the little toy with the last vestiges of his unique magical power took some time, and when he finished he fled the scene, neither alive, nor dead, nor undead.

Meanwhile, Elias had raced downstairs and pursued the wife. He finally caught her, but Rollan was nowhere to be seen. Knowing she had hidden the baby somewhere, Elias demanded to know where. Before she could be forced to talk, she took her own life with her dagger.

Elias cursed and searched her body, but found nothing.

Elias resolved to spend his life searching for his nephew, and used a series of slippery legal tricks to absolve himself of suspicion of the murders and to gain ownership of the toy workshop. To his ire, he discovered that the storeroom where the toymaker had kept his store of magical toys was locked with a special lock - he recognized the family crest and knew only the family signet ring would gain him access. So, in that very workshop where he had killed his only brother, Elias set about crafting mundane toys, honing his art and biding his time until he could find the child that would make him rich.

The animated wooden toy Tybius found the body of his wife and swore to locate his son and avenge his own death. But he was only a wooden toy – how could he hope to accomplish anything? The first person who spotted him would sell him as a magical curiosity. He marched off, increasingly hopeless.

Rollan, meanwhile, was found by a kindly woman. He had the silver ring tied about him on a cord and was wearing a diaper embroidered with his first name. The woman took him in as her own, fearing that he would only suffer more if brought to one of the already overcrowded orphanages. This was a wise decision, though not for the right reasons - for Elias was watching the orphanages closely.

Rollan sprouted like the acorn of his prophecy – tall and strong. He spent the first fifteen years of his life being raised by the kindly woman and believing she was his mother. She raised him to be a kind and honorable young man. Finally she grew ill, and on her deathbed, she told him the truth, and pressed the silver ring into his hand, telling him to seek his destiny. The youth nodded, “I understand. I forgive you mother.” And she died.

Then, emboldened like the teenager he was, Rollan set out to Find His Destiny, knowing that with the mystery of how he had been found, it was bound to be something exciting. In stories, after all, children like him always turned out to be princes! Not knowing of the evil that still searched for him, Rollan set out like a moth to a flame into his uncle’s waiting trap.

For indeed his uncle Elias had not been idle these long years. He had studied magic in secret, so as to better control Rollan when he found him. He had studied the toymaker’s craft, though he lacked the intuitive genius of his brother, and developed a reputation, not as a wonderful toymaker, but as a staid businessman. Elias had long ago guessed that Rollan possessed the family signet ring, and also that eventually he would strike out, seeking his destiny. He knew that, whenever his nephew set out, that his curiosity would drive him right into his own clutches. The family crest on the ring was not, after all, much of a secret. A very little amount of research would be needed for Rollan to find his long-lost uncle. Patiently, and steeping in his own evil ambitions, Elias waited.

But, unknown to Elias, a wooden toy solder Tybius also was searching, and had given up wandering Mor’s End randomly on its own. After a few months it wasn’t even certain it would recognize Rollan, unless the ring was around and visible. Coming to the same conclusions as the uncle, about Rollan eventually finding his own way home, the soldier returned to the workshop where it had worked and died and passed the time in hiding, waiting for the day when its small self could make a difference.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The family ability to enchant toys was known to the family in centuries past, but forgotten by the time the toymaker discovered the talent. The silver signet ring is an heirloom dating back to this time. The ability was originally used to make Animated Objects for use in battle, but has weakened with time to only being able to place permanent Prestidigitations on small objects (except in extreme cases, like the death of the toymaker, where stress allows a greater enchantment).

The signet ring is actually a special kind of Quall’s Feather Token: Tree combined with a Ring of the Ram. This is the true meaning of the prophecy, "Mighty oaks from little acorns grow." Only a member of the family, possessing the ability to enchant toys, can invoke the ring, and initially only in a time of great stress. The tree erupts from the ring with the force of a Ring of the Ram (doing 2d6 damage on a hit), but retracts back inside after striking. Generally this occurs when the wearer, in rage or desperation, strikes at an opponent with his fists. The toymaker never had the opportunity to discover the powers of the ring.

Elias has been studying wizardry so he can better control Rollan. His emphasis is on Enchantment spells (he’s particularly interested in Charm Person). His level will be whatever level is a good threat for the PCs, (the stat block presented here is for 3rd level).

PLOT HOOKS

There are several ways to get the PCs involved in this situation.

1) They could meet Rollan near the beginning of his search and be fascinated by his story of abandonment and his quest for his true identity. The characters might also be fascinated with the signet ring – especially if they notice that it radiates strong magic. Helping him find his uncle Elias will be simplicity in itself, and seem like a happy ending. That night, the party will be contacted by the animated toy soldier Tybius and implored to “help, something terrible is happening!” Rollan, Charmed by Elias, will be about to use the signet ring to open the storeroom of magical toys. The toy Tybius will explain everything it knows on the way there (which is everything except where Rollan has been these 15 years).

2) The party could be contacted by Elias (who is growing impatient) and commissioned to locate his long-lost nephew. The toy soldier Tybius will overhear this, and attempt to follow the characters (perhaps hide in their packs). The toy will reveal itself when they find Rollan and implore them to restore him (Rollan) to his rightful heritage and kill Elias.

3) Rollan could have lost the signet ring several years ago, and somehow the adventurers find it (if they found a magical ring in their last adventure, this is a good segue). Researching the crest and following up on the info will easily locate Elias, but he’ll still want the adventurers to find his nephew (hook jumps to #2).

ENDGAME

Eventually, Rollan will end up in the workshop with the toy soldier Tybius, Elias, and the adventurers. When the truth unfolds regarding the murder of his parents, he’ll attack Elias (and discover the power of the ring) with all the passion of a teenager enraged. The animated solder will fight to the best of its ability alongside him. Elias will fight to the death, but try to preserve Rollan’s life if at all possible (still believing he can somehow use him).

After Rollan is restored to his rightful place, the solder will lose its animation magic and become a mundane toy, its mission complete.

One of the toys in the storeroom is a buzzing, flying, wooden dragonfly. Rollan will give it to the party as a gift for helping (assuming they help in the final confrontation). It had no special powers other than buzzing slowly in random directions, but is quite valuable as a curiosity.

Equipment: Book "The Official History of Mor's End Volume II", Quill, Black Ink, Red Ink, Blue Ink, Scholars Outfit.
Languages: Common, Elven, and Dwarven.

History:
Jalryn’s father is a wealthy merchant. As a young child, she would from time to time, accompany her father on his caravan as it traveled through Enheim. She usually approached these trips as a vacation from her schooling and chores. However on one trip to a dwarven province she saw something that changed her life forever.

As the caravan slowly traveled through the dwarven settlement, deep within a mountain, she saw the writing on the wall. Dwarven stonecutters had inscribed onto the wall the history of the dwarven people. The text seemed to go on and on as far as she could see. As they passed by, her father read some of the writings to her. She looked on in wonder and awe, even though she could not read the strange writings, the thought of what those words said spellbound her. At that moment she knew that she wanted to be one of the recorders of history, to preserve the bold actions of today to inspire the deeds of tomorrow.

The first coin that she earned she spent on paper, quill, and ink. She used it to record the events that she found important in her life and those she thought might be important to others. This marked the beginning of her career as a historian. She held herself to the historian’s credence “I have not slept a wink as the history of the world unveiled itself to me”. It is a figure of speech meaning that she always watching for events that will shape the world around her.

Additional Information
Jalryn is now 24 years old with green eyes and brown hair. She wears modest, yet finely made clothing. She is mildly attractive and she tries to use her charm to her advantage when trying to solicit information from people. Since her return she has proclaimed herself “The Official Historian of Mor’s End”. She is currently working on her second volume “The Official History of Mor’s End Volume II”. Sometimes she is guilty of making the events that she chronicles “more interesting” for the reader by adding her own spin to them. From time to time this of course totally distorts the actual facts of the event.

She thirsts for new and interesting bits of history to add to her writings. She is especially interested in Dwarven history as it was what first gave her initial spark. She mingles in the inns of Mor’s End, particularly with some of the more elderly residents and local adventurers trying to find interesting bits of information for her current volume. When people turn her down and she believes that they have some good information she does not hesitate to use her read lips or listen skill to borrow the information that she needs. She justifies this as history belongs to everyone, not just a few people. It should be written for all to read and know. She hopes someday with the help of investors and the local government to erect a great monument. A wall of pure white marble in which the greatest of all the deeds in Mor’s End to be inscribed upon it, just as the dwarven settlement that she saw long ago.

PC Hooks:
Some rough adventurers came into Mor’s End fresh from the field. Thinking that they might have some good stories she eavesdropped on them and overheard some things that she should not have and now her life is in danger from them. She asks the PCs to protect her.

The PCs were a target of her “more interesting” history is her current edition. The PCs have been made to look somewhat foolish and now they must convince her to write a retraction or suffer a tarnish reputation in Mor’s End.
