Enchantment equaliviant

Greetings.
I was wondering what all you happy people thought the following enchantment would be equal to:
Upon command, the buisness end of the weapon is covered in poison (for this particular enchant i want to go with 'Drow Poison' from CA). The poison can not harm the weilder. The effect remains untill another command is given. Upon a succesful hit, the target must make the standard save as if I had simply applied the poison to the weapon.

I'm thinking this is equal to a enchant +1, maybe a +2.

Thank you for your time. :D

If you use the Dagger of Venom as an example:

The poison ability appears to be equivalent to a +1 ability; HOWEVER, it is only usable once per day and the effects are set as the spell with a DC of 14.

If you want something more powerful than that, than I'd definitely suggest going up to +2 or higher...

Oh! Doesn't Magic of Ferun have a Poison Special ability in it? I can't remember and don't have the book on me, sorry.

This is equal to a casting of the spell Poison at will.....heck, it's worse, as it can be used multiple times per round.

3rd level spell * 5th CL * 2000gp = 30,000gp if it was a slotted magic item.

Translating into an enchantment plus is not quite so straight forward. Still a +3 or +4 doesn't seem out of line.

Agreed... and I'd say even +4 or +5... or maybe a 45,000 base price for that ability alone.

I wouldn't allow it as given. You definitely need to provide some more restrictions such as uses/day, doses/use, DC, etc. I don't know off-hand the stats on the Drow poison.

The difficulty with the "high end" is that you run into:
  • Brilliant energy +4 bonus
  • Dancing +4 bonus
  • Vorpal +5 bonus
Which are (arguably) better than a poison that only does ability damage on a failed DC 14 Fort save.

YMMV.....although

...is right out. ;)

Ah.

I had neglected to look up the poison in question.

What's the Fort save? We can base the "effective spell level" off of that. This sounds like a 5th level spell, which means:

5th spell level * 9th CL * 2000gp = 90,000gp

...as a slotted magic item use activated.

If the poison ability of a dagger of venom were meant to be a enhancement (not "enchantment") equivalant, I'd think it'd be listed as a separate property that could be added to an item. Since it's not, I'm guessing it'd be a flat gp value (especially since it wouldn't scale well, with the low Fort save.)

But I'll be durned if I can reverse engineer the price. The dagger is only 2000gp more than a regular +1, but the lowest I can get a once-a-day poison item ((Spell level 3 x Caster Level 5 x 2000) x 0.2 for 1/day) is 6000.

But Save or Sleep poison is not too much different than a targeted Symbol of Sleep, which is a 5th level spell, so Nail's calculation looks good. Note that makes it a DC 17 poison if one assumes it's treated as a spell effect.
