Hey guys!

I'm so flattered that there's people waiting to hear about this! My profuse apologies. I've been very busy recently but haven't forgotten you guys.

It all calms down next week so I'll definitely write it up for you then. It went really well, though, I can tell you! Had to do some reactive DMing but it was fab!

See you in a bit!

Can't wait for this!

Inspired by your post I'm working on an encounter where the party has to transport a large Eberron Shard, Siberys shard and Khyber shard across a river but only two things (characters and shards) can go in the boat at once and two shards left together will cause various effects when the third is not present. Of course there will be monsters to complicate things too...

How about: "HIS PRIDE DEMANDS A GIFT OF ONE GALLON OF BLOOD FOR EACH RACE. BUT BEWARE - WHILST AN INSUFFICIENT QUANTITY WILL DISPLEASE HIM, TOO GREAT AN OFFERING WILL AWAKEN HIS BLOOD LUST."

And let the players make of that what they will. I certainly wouldn't want to awaken his blood lust.

I think the "gallon" term should be removed. Maybe make the first part of the puzzle deciphering an arcane formula that points to three vessels. One vessel being too little, one vessel being too much and the middle one being just right. Of course, it just happens that middle vessel has been smashed and the PCs have to figure a way to get the right amount out of the remaining.

Even more apologies, guys. My career means I have plenty of downtime then it goes absolutely mental. This is one of those times! I really do promise to type it up. Promise!

Finally! The write up!

MASSIVE apologies, firstly, for the delay in this. I've been involved in a few shows in a row as well as auditioning for some future ones and it all got VERY hectic!

Here's the party set-up:

Aoife – elven ranger, quiet and thoughtful, but as true as her arrows
Arton – human cleric who believes in the strength of prayer to cure all
Dew Lee Bew – dwarven warden who likes to remind the earth she's there by hitting it with a hammer
Kadrash – dragonborn fighter who is as loyal and selfless as he is strong
Scar – half-orc rogue with a penchant for knives
Titania Iceblade – eladrin wizard as interested in fashion as the arcane arts

The party entered the room cautiously, feeling a little wary after the previous rooms of nasty traps. After checking the blood fountain, sarcophagi and runes – which a successful Arcana check informed them were some kind of inactive teleport ritual, they finally saw the altar with its two buckets and glass bowl in the centre, and as they read the plaque it boomed out the message and the runes lit up. They stopped for a bit to try and work it out.

Two of my quieter players – Arton and Aoife – really lit up here, loving puzzles, and the others, seeing their excitement, really picked up on the mood. They ended up deciding on a different solution than I did – to fill the 3g bucket, bring it back and fill the bowl, then fill the 3g bucket again and bring it back to fill the 5g, then once more with the 3g to come back and fill the 5g, leaving the 3g with 1 gallon in it the then pour into the bowl to make 4 gallons. This isn't the quickest solution but I didn't tell them that!

Aoife, who doesn't normally take the lead, grabbed the 3g bucket and made her way to the blood fountain. The undead came to life and Aoife got absolutely mauled by the skeletons and zombies who are programmed to go for the bucket. To add insult to injury, she was grabbed by one of the zombies. At this, the party sprung to action: Kadrash ran in and Shield Bashed the zombie off Aoife, freeing her; Arton seared a skeleton, dropping it; Dew Lee grabbed bucket and ran on, toward the fountain and managed to fill the bucket. Titania and Scar stayed by the statue, obviously having played one two many adventures with me and knowing my mind. Titania dropped one of the skeleton minions and Scar readied an action.

Aoife got to the fountain and grabbed the bucket. I had decided that the 3g would give slowed and the 5g would give slowed and disallow anything but move actions. I also wanted to give them a chance to use skills to help overcome this, so I deemed a successful medium Athletics check would allow a full move. Aoife tried this and succeeded. However, at the end of her move, she got rushed by the gravehounds and knocked prone, causing the bucket to spill. There were groans all round from the party! The poltergeist appeared and Scar jumped him instantly hitting and doing a nice amount of damage but simultaneously finding out about the insubstantial rules! He and Titania got blasted by the poltergeist in return and the push of the attack threw Titania down a pit. Arton ended up 1-on-1 with a zombie. Kadrash bull rushed the other zombie into the other pit – with a +2 bonus for describing how he bounced of the diagonal wall, shield held above his head – which was lucky because he hit by 1! For a brilliant description he also earned himself a “do something Cool” card. Arton's Faith wavered as his Lance went wide of the zombie. Dew Lee Bew did her job fantastically and rushed into the centre of the large group of enemies, marking them all. Titania failed her Athletics check twice and stayed down in the pit.

Aoife tried again, filled the bucket, succeeded on her Athletics to move back and then decided to THROW the bucket to Kadrash! I deemed a high Athletics and an action point for another action would be needed to throw it carefully enough and another high Athletics to catch it. Aoife, who was fairly beaten at this point, decided it was a risk worth taking, spent her action point and rolled...a 20! The bucket travelled in a perfect, level parabola towards the dragonborn. Scar, once again, decided to ready an action to hit the poltergeist when it attacked and I wasn't entirely sure why. Kadrash rolled easily high enough to safely catch the bucket and move twice to the statue. Cackling gleefully I rolled to hit him with the poltergeist's scream and push him away. Scar jumped in and attacked with a Bait and Switch, moving the poltergeist out of range of Kadrash! Clever. The frustrated poltergeist did manage to exact some serious revenge on the half-orc, though. Kadrash poured the 3 gallons into the glass bowl. The statue screamed “It is not enough!!” Since my intention was for all 4 gallons to be poured in at once, and it is possible, I decided that all the undead attacks would do ongoing 3 as blood from each wound is sucked out and dragged through the air to the statue. Arton kept on the edges and kept Dew Lee Bew up, who was taking and dishing out a serious beating, with his Healing Word. Titania finally got out of the pit and started blasting minions to hell. At this point I began to describe the destroyed undead reforming. It's a fair description to say that the party pooped themselves.

Aoife delayed her turn to after Kadrash so that he could make it back to her with the bucket and then selflessly charge a zombie. The undead hit quite nastily and none of the team escaped bar Titania and the ongoing damage started to scare them. A ghoul got to Aoife and immobilized her. So, under the advice of Arton, she delayed again. Scar took another pop at the poltergeist and seemed to be making serious progress. Arton cast Astral Seal and allowed Aoife to save against her condition. She took the opportunity to make it to the fountain tried an Athletics check to make it back again...and failed! She tripped and started to fall. Looking panicked, she remembered her “do something cool” card from a previous encounter and asked if she could turn the trip into a cartwheel on the bucket and continue. I thought that sounded pretty fun and so decided a high Acrobatics check would succeed and she did! She decided to run to a circle and hope, and was teleported to the circle nearest Titania. Dew Lee Bew spent her Second Wind and kept on with her work, tying down the gravehounds and one of the ghouls. Titania asked if it was possible to use Mage Hand to take the bucket from Aoife's hands. Even though the power did have a weight limit, the party was in a bit of a state, so I decided that with high Arcana check I'd allow it. She rolled very well and managed two moves and a minor to pour the 3g bucket into pour into the 5g. As some of the undead reassembled the team were giving each other nervous eyes. But collectively they gritted their teeth and went for it.

Unfortunately the next round didn't start so well for them. A critical and some other solid hits took Dew Lee down and the zombie grabbed Kadrash and threw himself himself down the pit with him in his arms. Arton took a beating from afar but as the poltergeist left a nasty mark on Scar's soul, he unleashed his daily and ripped the thing close to re-death. Kadrash retaliated by Shield Bashing his zombie away and trying to climb out of the pit. Unfortunately, the distraction of the zombie proved too much and he stayed in the pit. Arton, trying to hold off his zombie, gets Dew Lee up with his remaining Healing Word and spends his Second Wind to try and gain some perspective. Aoife decided this time that she'd help out with some ranged effort after moving to the centre of the room. Dew Lee got up and, like a true dwarf, just kept swinging away. Titania saw the opportunity to destroy the poltergeist but seeing her team-maytes in trouble distracted her and she missed. Things were looking dicey but like the true heroes they are they went for one last push.

The undead were obviously taken aback by this group mettle as the majority of their attacks were held off, dodged or clattered helplessly away. All except Dew Lee who suffered the second critical from a gravehound and hit the ground. A worried murmur crossed the table. Scar pulled himself together from the chill in his soul, spending his Second Wind then ran to the pit with the dragonborn in. Then, spending an action point he placed a dagger deep into the zombie's brain and watched it crumple to the ground. Kadrash used the falling body to propel himself out of the pit and smash a skeleton. Arton selflessly blew away the last enemy in Aoife's way, stunning himself. Aoife took the opportunity to run to the statue and fire a twin strike at the gravehounds. Dew Lee Bew's luck was running out as she failed her first death saving throw. Titania also spent her Second Wind and ducked into cover. There was a genuine buzz around the table as the party were desperately discussing what they could do.

The next round saw another party member hit the ground as the rising undead took down the stunned, faithful cleric and the arrows of the skeleton put Titania on the back foot. Scar's vendetta with the poltergeist came to a head as he rounded the corner and ripped it apart, sending it back from whence it came and being thrown back against the wall as it's dying breath sent force waves toward the half-orc. Arton saved against his death saving throw as did Dew Lee and the two unconscious members looked worried. Going with their plan, Kadrash delayed til after Aoife to try their bucket throw idea again. The elf ran with the bucket to a teleport circle and got very lucky by appearing in the one nearest the fountain. She ran the gauntlet of the undead in her way but took some serious hits and fell unconscious by the fountain. There was a huge groan from the table and murmurs of “we're gonna die”. Kadrash was completely defiant and with a growl of “Not if I can help it!” ran to bucket, attempting to scoop it up as he went – a designated medium Thievery check. Avoiding the gravehounds' attacks, and with a scraped success, he filled the bucket and ran back towards statue, only to be struck by a ghoul and immobilized. In a desperate moment of inspired teamwork he asked if he could spend his action point and “do something cool” card to throw the bucket in a way that would allow Titania to catch it. I decided that a high Athletics check with a -5 would allow a last ditch attempt. Dew Lee's player actually got up and started massaging Kadrash's player's shoulders! With a roll of an 18, making a 30, I allowed the handle to flap up fortuitously as the bucket travelled through the air. Titania, in return rolled a 28 with her Arcana and the Mage Hand plucked the bucket gently out of the air and moved it to the statue. With another roll, 2 gallons were poured into the 5g bucket. All that was needed was a final action to pour the remaining blood into the bowl. A good Arcana check was all that was needed. Titania failed! The bucket began to fall.

The whole table screamed “DO SOMETHING COOL!!”, so the wizard spent her card and action point to create another hand at an angle to direct the bucket to pour the blood into the bowl. She even made the gesture. Literally everyone, including me, stood up for the dice roll. Arton started a drum roll, and there was a rising “oooaaahhh”. Feeling the pressure, Titania closed her eyes and threw the dice...a 19, making a total of 32 . There were cheers and clapping and downing of (fizzy) drinks. Delphus sated, all the undead dissipated.

We actually had to end the session there, due to time constraints. But I think I would have anyway. There was no way we could have gone on cos we were all exhausted!

I'll quite happily discuss this further but I have to say that I felt this was a great success, not most of all because my two quietest players: Aoife and Titania really showed their enjoyment of the session. Aoife learnt that getting stuck in and battered around is actually fun, even if it doesn't feel like it at the time and Titania felt like an absolute hero, instead of the one that stands at the back.

It took an awful long time to write this so I'll leave it here for now!

I used this is a campaign i wrote/ran last week, i think it went down quite well. I changed the creatures a little, and the setting, making it more in tune with my story. I didnt say how many gallons were needed, but asked for one gallon for each of Urgathoa's most powerful followers, then allowed knowledge checks so i could tell them.

I also let them make a strength check to decrease the penalty on carrying the buckets. I went with 3 gallons halves speed, 5 gallons halves speed and doesnt allow any action other than movement/free action speech, then allowed strength checks so they didnt reduce speed. Any action made against/by people while holding the buckets of blood required either strength or dex checks to not drop the buckets, and new strength checks were needed every time they picked up a full bucket.

I also changed the monsters around, but kept them as undead and went with the same idea of having monsters that would stall more than actually kill them. Unfortunately my group are smart, they didnt mess up, and were careful, they know i like to punish them, so i didnt get to use the Bloody Bones i had stored in the vat of blood...

I ran this in a pathfinder ish campaign.

Anyway thanks for the idea, i didnt take credit for it in the game!
